Okay how far off (into the future) is Sibelius and Finale before they do this?

Regarding this, this is what Sam had to say:

Hi All,

We'll announce any changes if/when we ever modify the licensing options. The current plans are to continue the perpetual license so you still own Sibelius outright. If we do introduce subscription, we won't force you into something you aren't comfortable with. Looking at Adobe, for example, you have to go down the subscription route."

Thanks Bob

Yes Bob, only time will tell. I tend to read more into the verbiage used.
Sometimes it's used for obfuscation.

Pro Tools is desperately scrambling to hold their ground in the new world where they are facing at least a dozen programs which are technically superior.

Pro Tools First is a poor attempt at enticing new users. You can't even swap sessions with the full fledged version. I'm not going to go into the details, visit the Pro Tools Expert website if you are interested.

But that said, let's support Sam Butler, he is a good man. And there are more people working behind the scenes, Joe Pearson included.

That's as may be, but if an Avid employee states that
a "perpetual license" means you "OWN" the software, he's not telling the truth. Whether the reason for the untruth was ignorance or something worse is for people to judge for themselves.

If you look for the truth (as it stands today, and as it has been communicated to Sam Butler by the Avid bigwigs) in the statement, it's easy to find. If you look for "something worse" I expect you'll find that too!

Remember how useful close textual analysis of official pronouncements proved in the Campaign days? Not.

I agree with supporting Sam...and wonder about, and am having a difficult time with the sentiment expressed above.

In short, FWIW, I dont agree with it, and feel it grossly unfair and undeserved.

Just my opinion..YMMV, and yes lets support Sam.

@Rob Tuley: don't take the statement about "owning the software" literally - that is just marketing gibberish. What the Avid guys means, to put it in legally correct terminology, is a non-exclusive worldwide perpetual license to use the version of the software; by contrast to having a time limited license which will expire after a year or even from month to month.

Avid has got this new model for Pro Tools where instead of just buying a perpetual license for a new version, you can now buy (a) support plans and/or (b) upgrades and/or (c) a time limited license.

And all this is on top of a "free" but severely crippled version of PT First which just gives you a brief flavor of the program but which is really unsuitable even for educational purposes.

They are making it too complicated in my opinion, but who am I, I am not running Avid, I'm sure the bean counters and business executives at Avid have figured out that this was a great way to go forward. Avid's not alone, Microsoft has a similar model for Office, and I believe Adobe has something similar as well.

Going back to Sibelius though, keep in mind that all of their products are different, for example Media Composer has a different licensing system and even a different software piracy protection scheme (iLok is only used for Pro Tools). So do not assume that this is necessarily the future for Sibelius.
