I can take my answer "off list," but I am wondering if Sibelius will be moving to a subscription license plan the way Media Composer has (and, some say, PT will). I do NOT want to start speculation or a flame war etc., but as a professional mentioned this to me today, and I am exploring purchasing Sibelius for my work place, I would like to know if such a change is planned and imminent beforehand.
i hope this never comes about however, if they do like ms office has done and leave it to your choice subscription or full product i guess it will make sibelius more affordable and may attract a new user group

I use photoshop and indesign. Adobe is forcing subscription for next versions. That's the end of my upgrades because I can't justify the cost since I don't make enough from their use.
Ralph, thank you. Interesting post. I've always found Scorch to be a PITA. If this is usable for those of us who self-publish it would be a godsend. If it's just for Schirmer and Boosey... not so much. And, yes, there are no guarantees in life. There's always Finale (and maybe whatever Steinberg is cooking up).
Philip and Robert - this is what I'm afraid of. If it happens, it happens, but I'm not a big fan of the subscription model unless you actually OWN your current copy and can re-up without full repurchase price. The devil is definitely in the details.
We'll announce any changes if/when we ever modify the licensing options. The current plans are to continue the perpetual license so you still own Sibelius outright. If we do introduce subscription, we won't force you into something you aren't comfortable with. Looking at Adobe, for example, you have to go down the subscription route.
Bob, the stock prices will fluctuate day by day and I doubt speculation about licensing options for Sibelius will influence this.

Hi Sam--
Thanks for replying--and yes of course the market fluctuates day by day.
However, its a pretty big hit, and NOT a normal daily fluctuation--almost a dollar!!--and today down another 35 cents or 2.6%, for a total of -$1.28 down..
or about 9% loss, since Monday's close, if Im not mistaken..
And usually you can trace these things directly to an "event", announcement, etc.
So AVID's stock dropped from $14.22 at close on Monday, Jan 26 to $12.94 close today Wed Jan 28, and Im sorry but thats a LOT more than daily fluctuations...especially since the "event" triggering it would probably be NAMM, and AVIDs announcements there which closed on the 26th--all of which figure in with the topic of this post.
So perhaps its a coincidence, but Im not so sure it is.

Good to know,Sam.
Thanks Bob

A much more reasonable explanation is that the stock tracked the trends of broader market indices over the past few days but just in a more volatile manner, since it's just one stock, of course, and not an entire index. I'm no finance expert, but I wouldn't be too concerned with it.
Getting a bit more back on topic, Sam, do you imagine that self-published composers will be able to use Cloud Publishing at some point or will it only be a complex enterprise-type coding thing that places like Schirmer, Boosey, Pepper, etc. would be using? I can't say strongly enough how amazing it would be to be able to add scores and audio to our own websites without having to hire coders and designers the same way that Wordpress has enabled website to be owner-driven (vs reliant on a web tech or company).
We are definitely working on workflows to allow you to use SCP in your own site. We could even create a little Wordpress plugin to make it super simple for you.
I am curious about transposing scores/sheet music in iPad apps, like those for Musicnotes and Sheet Music Direct. How do those transpositions happen? Are they all downloaded image files, or some sort of Scorch function?
These apps do it locally. Those based on Avid Scorch are mini versions of Sibelius too so they can handle transposition, change instruments, playback etc.
