Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius products on Mac OS X Mavericks
Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 22 Oct 07:18PM
As you may have heard, Apple have recently released the latest version of their operating system, Mavericks.

At this time, Sibelius is not fully supported on the new OS. For compatibility information for Sibelius, Pro Tools and Media Composer, please see the following article:

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/troubleshooting/Mac-OS-10-9-support-for-Media-Composer-Pro-Tools-Sibelius

In short, Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 First should be OK although the text in dialogs will be slightly different so may not appear correctly. Also, you may find you can't route the audio from Sibelius to a ReWire host, such as Pro Tools.

Sibelius 6 seemed to be OK although we didn't fully test it. We expect the same workarounds for registration are needed though along with the same problems with ReWire that Sibelius 7 has too.

Sibelius 5 and earlier simply won't run, as on the previous version of Mac OS X.

I'll post news as I have it if anything changes.

Sam

Hi Sam, thanks for the heads up.

I'm interested in your statement "Sibelius 5 and earlier simply won't run, as on the previous version of Mac OS X. I am running Sibelius 5 on Mountain Lion, and the only (!!) issue is that it crashes on playback. If I don't playback, it runs just fine. The publisher I work for (Hal Leonard) requires Sibelius 5, and I needed to buy a new computer that came with Mountain Lion, so fortunately I've got them playing fairly nicely together.

So, when you say Sibelius 5 simply won't run, will it not run LESS well than Mountain Lion? Or is it just the same?

Thanks heaps

Jared

I am using Sib7 and I need a new Mac. Are you going to publish fix for Sibelius 7?

@Jared: I'd think Sibelius 5 may well just crash during playback.

@Piotr: We're considering doing a patch Sibelius 7.1 but are going to balance this with our on-going development of the next version of Sibelius.

Am I being rather naive or is this just not good enough? My understanding is that Mavericks has been available for developers for several months and one would have thought that by the time it is released the bugs should be ironed out. I want to upgrade but as Sibelius is an integral part of my livelihood I can't afford the risk! (I must admit that Sam's comment that he will advise " anything changes" doesn't fill me with confidence, either)

Or have I missed something? I hope so.

Howard

Hi Howard,

A bit of background:

We believe the problem with the font in the dialogs is a bug in Mavericks and not in Sibelius. We (along with several other developers who are experiencing this same problem) reported the bug to Apple a long time before Mavericks was released but Apple didn't get round to fixing it in time.

We are hopeful that Apple will fix this in a future update but it's not clear at this time if and when this will happen.

We're very busy developing the next version of Sibelius but if we have time (and find Apple don't fix this soon), we'll consider releasing a patch for Sibelius 7.1.

As for the issue with ReWire, we're currently investigating this to see if it's a problem with our implementation of ReWire or a bug that Propellerheads will need to address.

As soon as I have news on both these issues, I'll let you know.

Sam

Thanks Sam!

I'm curious what the font looks like in dialog boxes - if you have the time, would you mind posting a screenshot?

Best wishes,

Here you go. It's not too disastrous but you'll see the font is slightly different, which has shifted things around by a few pixels.

Since my useage of Sibelius is very simplistic, I upgraded to Mavericks yesterday before I even thought about it.

After running and fiddling around I found that it all seems to work and I actually didn't notice the dialog bug talked about until I read here. Assuming that is the only issue, I'm a happy camper.

I upgraded to Mavericks today. Everything else seems to work fine with Sibelius 7.1.3, except that moving around the score is really sluggish. It seems that the problem gets worse with more complex scores, but it's noticeable even with simple ones.

This is a real failure on Avid's part. We should all understand that for many people, using Mavericks isn't optional. I'm talking about people who buy new Macs. They come with Mavericks installed! So is it Avid's position that someone buying a computer right now — maybe someone with an old machine that badly needs to be replaced — has to buy a PC, because Avid can't be troubled to make Sibelius work on Mavericks?

What about students coming to music school, and buying a new computer, or getting one as a gift for their parents? I teach at Juilliard, and Macs are far more common than PCs. Is Avid telling my students to buy a PC? Or to use Finale?

Sam, with all respect, I can't see how you can tell us you're all trying to decide whether to issue an upgrade for Mavericks, or instead wait for the next total Sibelius upgrade. The large upgrade will of course take a longer time than the patch would, and meanwhile — for how many months? — you've exiled many of your current and potential Mac users. Have a heart, and do the patch!

And at least tell us one thing. I looked at the graphic of the dialogue box that you uploaded, and thought, "Well, if that's the only change [one line of text breaking at a different point than it does on Mountain Lion], then why shouldn't I upgrade?" Would you confirm that all the menus and dialogues will be just as readable under Mavericks as they currently are, and there would never be a time when we'd lose any text?

Or maybe — and I do hope this was true — this was your way of subtly telling us we wouldn't have a problem (at least if we don't use ReWire), even though your bosses say we shouldn't upgrade. Very warm thanks for that, if it's true.

I have two Macs, a MacBook Pro and an Air that I use when I'm traveling. I'm going to try putting Mavericks on the MacBook Pro, and see how Sibelius works. I'll always have the Air with me when I'm home, and can switch to that for Sibelius if I have problems with Mavericks. After I've used Sib for a while on the big computer, I'll report here on how it functions.

Hi Greg,

We're very busy working on the next version of Sibelius and can't easily pull a developer off their current work to do a patch. We don't know how long it'll take to write and test the patch so we've had to balance this with adding new features and fixing other important bugs.

Generally, we are finding Sibelius runs very well under Mavericks but the text in the dialogs is using a different font and ReWire isn't working as expected. If you can live with these two issues, there's nothing stopping you upgrading to Mavericks.

Sibelius is faring a lot better on Mavericks than previous releases, for instance, Sibelius 6 wouldn't even start up and Sibelius 5 would crash when opening the mixer on 10.6; you couldn't even open and save files with Sibelius 4 on 10.5.

As soon as there's news on a patch or fix, I'll be sure to let you know.

Sam, thanks for your quick reply.

But with all respect, I'm surprised by what you say, and I think Avid has its priorities backwards. Of course you all could pull a developer off the next major Sib update — or pull the whole development team — if you thought it was important.

Or, more to the point — since Avid knew just as well as the rest of us that Mavericks was coming — you all could have said, months ago, "Let's delay work on the major update, and make sure we have a patch ready for Mavericks."

The reason for doing that, as I said before, is that with the policy you have now, you've exiled more than a few of your users. You say that I should feel free to upgrade as long as the font issue doesn't bother me, but I still don't know what that means, whether the font business will at some point be a real problem. And Avid's official language on Mavericks is very stern. We don't support this OS, so we recommend that you don't upgrade.

How do you think that reads to someone who badly needs a new Mac, and now is ready to buy one? Which will come with Mavericks installed. Avid isn't exactly welcoming these people! And isn't exactly welcoming new users, maybe committed, talented musicians in high school or college, excited to buy a Mac and plunge into work with Sibelius.

And what about people who really need ReWire? They're out in the cold. Any of them with a Mac that's stolen, or dies, or is just so old it cries out to be replaced — these people have nowhere to go, if they still want to be using a Mac. Those with working but need-to-be-replaced Macs will have to wait months for the new version. And might not want, or might not be able to afford, an upgrade to Sibelius 8.

Companies much smaller than Avid have gotten their software ready for Mavericks. For instance Literature and Latte, who make Scrivener, popular software for writers. They're so small that they have just a single developer working on their upcoming iPad version, and had to delay it when she got sick. But they just issued a Mavericks-ready upgrade. Hard to believe Avid couldn't do this if it wanted to.

With respect, but shaking my head,

Greg

I'm getting the message that it ISN'T that important - just that a dialogue box may look a bit untidy.

The more interesting news is that more than one developer is actually working on the next Version of Sibelius. I hope we can accept that information at face value.

I completely agree with Greg Sandow. That the CURRENT version of a piece of software ought to be made compatible with the CURRENT OS is a no-brainer for any serious developer. That Avid is even CONSIDERING to altogether jettison the compatibilty of Sib7 with Mavericks is in my opinion quite outrageous... sorry for being so blunt.

The sky is not falling here. Mavericks has been out less than 48 hours.

Avid's official warning to not upgrade may be stern, but it is the prudent advice until the issues are resolved.

Sam's advice with its caveats should help those deciding whether or not to use Mavericks right away.

The font issue is likely related to Qt and can hopefully be fixed in time:

https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-32789

http://successfulsoftware.net/2013/10/23/fixing-qt-4-for-mac-os-x-10-9-mavericks/

Each major OS upgrade has compatibility hiccups that are ironed out in time. Even the 10.6.7 update in 2011 caused more severe font problems that were eventually solved a month after its release.

A better comparison than Scrivener would be Finale, and you can read here about similar cosmetic defects and the like:

http://makemusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5511/

(And of course, Finale doesn't have ReWire capability at all)

Please get me right: It would be perfectly fine if Avid just said: We are aware of the problem and working on a fix.

What outrages me is that apparently Avid is considering not to fix the problem in Sib7 and force the Sibelius/Mavericks users to wait and pay for Sib8.

Sam has said that the font issue may be an Apple problem (although one that could possibly be fixed by Avid), and the ReWire issue may be a Propellerhead problem, and he has said they are investigating.

I agree that if a solution to one or both of these issues is not evident in due course from Apple and Propellerhead respectively, Avid should release a free update that addresses these problems. Keep in mind though, that at least in the case of 10.6.7, it took about a month for Apple to correct the problem:

* * *

"To those experiencing the sluggish running of Sibelius 7 on Mavericks - I have found a workaround/solution:

1) Open Sibelius
2) Put your computer to sleep for a few seconds
3) Wake up computer
4) Enjoy Sibelius running at full speeed.

I think THIS is a bigger bug than the "font" issue, which - I don't really care about.  I actually find it's, ironically, more attractive the way it is now!"

I wonder if this is at all related to the App Nap feature that Mavericks has? Could you see if disabling App Nap for Sibelius by clicking the app icon for Sibelius and pressing Command-I (or selecting File > Get Info) and clicking the checkbox "Prevent App Nap" also works?

Thx for the reply Sam.

Anyone interested in viewing the font difference between Mountain Lion and Mavericks can view the screenshot, it's more useful to see them side-by-side to compare. There is little to worry about there.
======
In all fairness to Sam, in 2011, there was a font issue that was entirely Apple's fault, see here:
http://tidbits.com/article/12078

Apple eventually offered a fix:
If you are using Mac OS X 10.6.7 or earlier, go to:
Apple>Software Update (upper left of your screen) and run System Update to install 10.6.8.

Sibelius offered some fixes eventually also:
http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/en/a552
AND
http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/en/a636

I remember getting an email from Product Manager Tom Clarke thanking me when the font issue was found and him being relieved that it wasn't Sibelius causing the issue. It was an Apple problem and took months to rectify on Sibelius and the Apple side after the release of OS 10.6.7.
======

I also am upset at Avid's firing of Daniel Spreadbury and his team, but if Sam says:
"We're very busy developing the next version of Sibelius but if we have time (and find Apple don't fix this soon), we'll consider releasing a patch for Sibelius 7.1."
and . . .
"We're very busy working on the next version of Sibelius and can't easily pull a developer off their current work to do a patch."
. . . I'll take that at face value and realize he's working short-handed and doing the best he can and not blame him for Avid's shortcomings.

I think those using Rewire should not upgrade for now as Sibelius site says:
"Unable to use Sibelius as a ReWire device with Mac OS X 10.9. Although it may be possible to start Sibelius as a ReWire device in Pro Tools and other applications, Sibelius is unable to send the audio to the ReWire host. Sib-522."

Lloyd (a light user) said he had no issues with Mavericks and Sibelius and Heikki said that "moving around the score is really sluggish" so if I upgrade I'll report back, and eventually we Mac users will have to upgrade our OS.
======

@ Sam - Will Sibelius 8 will have the Rewire issue fixed and the font issue addressed when it is released?

Also, have you noticed any sluggishness in moving larger scores in Mavericks?

This is especially relevant to those of us purchasing new Macs with Mavericks already installed.

@ Greg Sandow - Can you please let us know how Sibelius works on your MacBook Pro running Mavericks?

Thanks to all concerned :-)

Did anyone try to run Sibelius in 32-bit mode on Mavericks?

I am doing that to run its in-built "Enhanced" MIDI synth (and also NI's Absynth as a VSTi) and I would not want to lose that possibility.

Thanks,

That's an interesting find, as the "QT" in your case stands for QuickTime, which is an Apple process, as opposed to "Qt", which is the UI framework apparently causing the font display issue in the dialogs.

I wonder what does the QTKitServer actually do? It seems that many different programs have their own instances of it running at the same time. As I'm typing this, my system is running two different "QT"-processes. One for Safari's web content, and one for Sibelius. The processes are named QTKitServer-(339) and QTKitServer-(468) respectively.

Considering the fact that Sam, his development team as well as the Ukranian team is working on Sibelius 8, I hope the text style issues get fixed up soon for Sibelius 7 (if not, we should wait for Sibelius 8). I think that Sibelius 8 might, just might, get an updated sound library too when it gets finally released (I predict that Sibelius 8 would be released sometime in Winter 2013/2014, maybe before or after Christmas, but I could be wrong).

I wonder if there's any way to usefully channel all this angst? The butterfly's wing - a small issue with text display - has been orchestrated into a hurricane of doom and despondency reminiscent of the glory days of the Campaign. Think what you could do with a four-note motif!

I took a risk after reading everything above and upgraded to Mavericks. Latest Sib.7 works find and actually first time I heard my large score without "memory cracks" under nuance marks. I did make the sleep-awake-trick. Maybe that was the thing, maybe Mavericks? That's worth of considering...

I don't see why people are so perturbed by all this, come on a slight change in font thats hardly noticeable won't stop you composing, I think if you think of things objectively there will always be issues with any new os a lot of my other programs have some problems with mavericks, and guess what, they haven't fixed them either! If mavericks meant that sibelius 7 crashed I'm sure they would be on it, Sam if you look even said they would look at it if a fix wasn't found in a timely manner. come on be fair people.

ok so rewire has problems yes, sam said they are waiting for more information again totally reasonable in my mind.

I feel some people are just doing this because of lack of faith at avid but i mean come on!

ps i have a 2009 mac and have noticed no slow down, perhaps it is to do with a newer architecture. would be interesting to know if the people with problems have ssd hard drives etc can you please post your mac specs.

What are the expected behaviors of ReWire caused by Mavericks?

I don't think that anybody actually cares about the font problem much. I personally find the "bug" font more pleasing.

> ok so rewire has problems yes, sam said they are waiting for more information again totally reasonable in my mind.

Totally agree. But they should take these things very seriously, since some of us Sibelius users ended up with buggy systems by accident or force (e.g. buying a new computer to replace a broken or stolen one). I'll tell you how I ended up upgrading my laptop to Mavericks, since I really wasn't going to after reading the heads up from Avid. I had auto update activated on my iPad, and one morning I noticed that it had updated the iWork suite to version 2. I thought that that was a nice surprise until I opened a file with it, and it warned that the new version of the software uses a different file type, which can't be opened on a computer unless you have OS X Mavericks and The latest update of iWork installed. I need Numbers and Pages for running my business, so I decided to upgrade my laptop since most of the previous major upgrades hadn't caused any issues. I still left my tabletop untouched so I'd have a working system if things suddenly went south. So I upgraded my laptop, tested all my important software, Sibelius 7, Pro Tools 10 and Pro Tools 11. Every single one of them seemed to run smoothly on the initial launch. Then I checked for those iWork updates, and get this, I couldn't update them because I originally bought them on a DVD. It turns out that App Store doesn't recognize the software on my hard drive at all, and I can't update before they fix this issue. Then later on with Sibelius running for the second time, it was sluggish. I have to work with this machine too, so it's a problem. I'm glad that the workaround in one of Michael Shapiro's post eased it quite a bit, but it's still there. Gladly I don't need ReWire with my laptop, so the sluggishness is the only problem affecting my workflow. But I won't upgrade my tabletop before ReWire works flawlessly on Mavericks, since I need it day in day out on that machine. On top of everything, I have to avoid the use of all the iWork Apps on my iPad now, since if I open a document with one of them, my iPhone 3GS and none of my computer's are able to open it. I Can't roll back to previous versions either, since then I'd have a couple of documents I'd not able to open at all.

> ps i have a 2009 mac and have noticed no slow down, perhaps it is to do with a newer architecture. would be interesting to know if the people with problems have ssd hard drives etc can you please post your mac specs.

My laptop is a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro with 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5 and 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. It has a 500GB 5400rpm hard drive.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

That's VERY naughty of Apple.

Something similar happened recently on my Nexus 7 tablet. An "update" to the useful Google Maps app removed a vital function - ample storage for an offline map. It's a mild nuisance having to turn off auto updates, but at least I was able to reinstate the old version.

Can you roll back iWork to the previous version?

I'm afraid in the world of apps, "update" very often means "more advertising".

Yes, indeed it is.

> Can you roll back iWork to the previous version?

No unfortunately I can't, since then I'd have a couple of documents I'd not able to open at all anymore. I contacted Apple Support regarding this issue, and they said that Apple is going to release updates for the old versions of iWork that'll understand the new file format. When they will be released, who knows? What I really don't get, is why they didn't release those updates first, and launch the new version second. Then there wouldn't have been a problem in the first place. They must have known/realized that this would be a problem. Oh well, Apple is as Apple does.

I suppose the moral is: keep control, don't allow auto-updates.

To use the motor car analogy, computing has progressed from requiring a resident mechanic/chauffeur to automatic gearboxes and pretty good reliability. But there's a distressing tendency now for the car to not only work out the route, but pick the destination too. Be very careful abour relinquishing control and wanting things to "just work".

It's not just a Mac thing now. Windows 8 installs dumbed-down "apps" that take precedence over the full versions. But at least the proper programs are still there, if you go looking.

Yes, I suppose so too. Although, I have to add, that I'd probably updated iWork anyway. Apple was very misleading with the info regarding the new file format, since they said that it was a universal format that would work on all of their devices.

To throw a bit more fuel on the fire, I visited one of the links posted above about the "font bug":

https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-32789

If you read down further to a post made in August (!), the "fix/workaround" to the bug was an addition of a single line of code to the library, and many developers did indeed do this. I suppose just not Avid.

Now, I know that no release is as simple as recompiling and passing it out ... but ...

Yes to this bit about relinquishing control. I have completely given up on corporate operating systems for just this reason (except I still have a legacy iMac with Snow Leopard for Sibelius). It's a shame there is such a divide between the "free" software/open source community and the world of "business". I'd gladly pay the same price for a version of Sibelius that runs on Linux so that I could enjoy the product without having to put up with all the nonsense that comes with the current requisite corporate operating systems.

Hi. As you might have been aware, Avid is planning to release Sibelius 7.5 sometime in Winter 2013/2014. The text issues might be fixed up by then. I think that the only problems with Sibelius 7 on OS X (pronounced Ten) Mavericks is the text issues.

Michael Marks,

There are serious issues that will prevent Sibelius 5 working correctly on Mavericks, so you should not contemplate that route. The compatibility issues between Sibelius 7 and Mavericks are largely superficial, involving smaller text size on menus and buttons. There is no known issue that prevents you and Sibelius doing anything that Sibelius was designed to do. Avid have declared that they do not support using Sibelius 7 on Mavericks, but, frankly, you have no alternative, because you do not have a choice on whether to upgrade the Mac OS or not.

Hi All,

I've been asked by several people for a status update on how Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 First are doing on Mavericks.

The issues we are tracking are:

* Rewire not sending audio from Sibelius to host
* Font used in dialogs is different (cosmetic only)
* Performance and responsiveness is not great

The workaround for the performance issue, which we've confirmed in-house, is to put your computer to sleep then wake it up. We are investigating the cause of this and have logged a bug with Apple.

I'll post more news when I have it.

Sam

no problems with photoscore ultimate here on mavericks, if there is something that you want me to test particularly on ultimate let me know and ill do my best, but playback is fine, scanning is fine, pdf reading is fine. all was working after the upgrade but i also updated the latest scanner/printer updates for good measure, but this was not needed as all was fine anyway.

Are there any news about Sibleius 7 and Mavericks? I believe, it must be known now at Avid, that there is a new Mac OS. Can we hope to have a Sibelius version which is compatible with this new OS which appeared absolutely surprising some days ago? I must buy a new Mac. And I would appreciate it very much if Avid would allow me to do so without having to install at first another OS. May we hope to get this update in this life?

Wotan, what is there that is stopping you from using Sibelius 7 on Mavericks right now? Many others are already doing so.

I have no special knowledge on this, but this article:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/compatibility/Sibelius-7-on-Windows-XP-and-Vista-compatibility
has been published since this thread started. The article states:

"there are no current plans for any further updates to Sibelius 7"

Which leaves us with the thought that maybe the full Mavericks compatibility will not arrive until Sibelius 7.5.

What me stops is the bad performance.

But what’s about Sibelius 7.5? Reading this article I find nothing about a future update. Is there some hint that Sibelius 7.5 will come sometimes and will be compatible with Mavericks?

Have you tried the cure that is discussed earlier in this thread? Putting the Mac OS to sleep, and then resuming?

Just once, when you first notice the problem.

Since other applications suffer the same problem, it is likely to be Apple's bug, not Avid's. Perhaps you should ask Apple when they are going to fix it.

Could this problem be to do with "App-Nap"? I discovered that Express Scribe (an audio player that I use for transcribing with a usb foot-pedal) is very laggy with "App-Nap" turned on, so disabled it for both Express Scribe and Sibelius. I have not encountered any performance issues since, with either program, or anything else for that matter, running on Mavericks.

App-Nap is NOT a bug, it's a FEATURE (apparently!). It slows down minimised processes to conserve power (and therefore battery life if you're running a laptop) but the problem is that it doesn't necessarily notice when an Application is actually being used again, and causes performance issues.

You can disable it for individual programs by opening the applications folder (as a folder, by alt-cmd-clicking the folder in the dock), browsing to Sibelius, right clicking on it, clicking "Get Info" and then ticking the "Prevent App Nap" box.

OK. I have the new computer with OS X 10.9.1. Power Nap is deactivated, and Sibelius is very slow. I must put the computer to sleep and wake it up, tja Sibelius’ Performance is OK, but by far not as good as with 10.8. But I unterstand: This is not a problem which could be interesting for AVID. There is just now the option to "sidgrade" to Finale. It seems the best solution.

Hi Wotan,

We are indeed interested to getting this issue resolved. It's not an easy problem to fix and Apple have confirmed it's on their plate to resolve. As mentioned on SibeliusBlog.com, we are looking into our own patch too as we don't have any assurances from Apple when their update will be released.

Until we have more news on this, the workaround is working for many users:

# Start Sibelius
# Go to Apple menu > Sleep
# Wait a few seconds
# Wake the computer up and log in

Klaus, above, suggests the 10.9.1 update has made things better for him so I hope it's better for others too. Our own tests here suggests 10.9.1 hasn't resolved the problem though.

I'll let everyone know when we have more news.

Sam

OK. I unterstand: Mavericks appeared suddenly some weeks ago, nobody knew that it will come, so there was no possibility to test Sibelius with Mavericks. Anyway: I spoke with some friends who use Sibelius and Finale: not one recommended the change to Finale, all said, Finale is a torture. So I will put my Mac to sleep whenever I start Sibelius and wait for the update. May be it comes before I enter my next life. (I don't believe it. But there are rumours about another software which will come and is a ignored heir of the Sibelius family...)

I am using Sibelius First with Mavericks 10.9.1, which is what I expect most students would be using. I am a high school teacher and trying out the demo version Sibelius First before I recommend it to my students. I am noticing in Sibelius First when I copy and paste text, Sibelius doesn't split the syllables at all. I have used Sibelius for years and this feature always worked correctly. Any comments?

Rather than wading through all these posts, I've held back from upgrading to Mavericks, in case this gives rise to problems with Sibelius 7. Could I ask whether the issues have been sorted yet, and if not, when are they likely to be?
Also, I'm sometimes asked to send a score to somebody with a much earlier version of Sibelius. Would exporting my scores to an earlier version present any problems if I were to upgrade my Mac to Mavericks?

As you see, this statement is asbolutely void. It means nothing and nothing happens. And nothig will happen. There is no differente between this statement and the Forst, Avid made about this problem: They confirmed the bug an declares that there will ne no update. That's the future of Sibelius.

I would not expect that the OS would have any effect on this. Be aware that the further back you convert a score, the more likely that details will be lost. Obviously features added in later versions of Sibelius (such as magnetic layout) will not be maintained in the earlier version.

I had to replace my Mac and have now the problem. But it's just a problem for the users of Sibelius not for AVID... I think well have to wait until we can have a look on Steinberg’s new program. But for the moment we must take the situation as it is. One can work wirb Sibleius, it’s just that we have to put the Mac to sleep and to wake it up, but it’s not a fine experience to get several times everyday the message, that we are nothing for AVID just because we already paid them...

Hi Woton,

Like I've said before, we are taking this seriously and are working with Apple to resolve the issue. Due to the developer agreement we have with Apple, we can't disclose the work that has been going on behind the scenes but I assure you that there's good progress being made and there should be a resolution soon.

Unfortunately we can't tell when it'll be available so in the meantime, you will need to put your computer to sleep and wake it up again each time you run Sibelius (which takes just a few seconds).

As this thread has become a little unwieldy, I have created this KB article in the hope that people will find the information more easily:

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/compatibility/Sibelius-sluggish-on-Mavericks

Sorry for the wait in getting this resolved.

Hi All,

I'm pleased to let you know that Apple have released Mac OS 10.9.2, which includes a fix to the way caches are handled that resolves the sluggishness of Sibelius 7 and Sibelius First on Mac OS 10.9.

After updating to 10.9.2, Sibelius will run as normal without having to send the Mac to sleep.

Hi Arfo,

We've made several improvements to how Sibelius runs uses ReWire so you should find it a lot more reliable, including making sure it works on Mavericks.

When setting up Sibelius as a ReWire device in Pro Tools, say, you need to make sure you choose the Audio ins or outs (I can't remember which off hand) in the ReWire window that pops up. The host can then receive the audio that Sibelius is sending.

Although Sibelius 6 may run on Mavericks, we haven't qualified it. Out recommendation is to upgrade to Sibelius 7.5 if you're going to be relying on Sibelius on a Mac running Mavericks.
