OT: Brussels Symphony replaces sheet music with Samsung tablets
Posted by Victor Garcia Pichardo - 08 Nov 04:29PM
Didn't think it would be practical to read from such a small screen, but apparently, they're doing it:

Hehehe...yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. Is this a one-shot deal, or are they permanently replacing all the sheet music?

Apart from the big Samsung commercial, indeed!

Interesting ... apparently it's partly a marketing thing for the Brussels Philharmonik, to distinct themselves from other orchestras. Although the video doesn't say it, I imagine that Samsung is sponsoring this project.

I have a couple of questions though:

1. What's the underlying software that allows for notes by a conductor on a score to be shared with the musicians (and vice versa, eg if the first violinist makes notes about bowings)?

2. How do they turn pages?

3. What about the millions of pages of existing scores - are they all going to be scanned to pdf?

I believe there's been a thread about similar software in the past ... there's a company that makes similar tablets, with a foot pedal to turn pages. Can't remember the name.

They mention a program called neoScores. From the photos in their facebook page, the tablets seem very small to me.

I remember Harry Connick Jr. had computer screens onstage, but a tablet would seem to be a more robust option.

The other questions I'm not so sure, but I imagine tapping the screen near the edge (similar to any reader type device or tablet) will not be much more cumbersome than actual paper page turns. I'm purely speculating here - I do not own this tablet, nor have I played music from a tablet, but I imagine page turns will not be the biggest hurdle. The other two questions will inspire future developments I'm sure.

I recently saw a chamber performance in NY where they were reading off of iPads. The pianist had a wireless pedal to turn pages, which means no page turners. If this becomes standard in some not-so-near-future, there'll be no more worrying about adjusting layout to accommodate page turns. String players - say goodbye to your rests...

The would have something like this for a footswitch

More interesting part is the legal issue of scanning/putting copyrighted works on the tablet. That is not officially allowed by most publishers and/or laws. However, if much of their music is PD or composed for them, then not much of an issue.

this video is a gigantic potemkin village. Five minutes of glorious talks but not a single image of a real working setup. I very much doubt that any professional musician is willing to play from such a tiny device. Sure, they will be in the future but definately not from a 10" screen. "The conductor is marking up the score and the players will have it on their screens" haha! Gurrelieder on a handkerchief!

This is a pretty old video (5 years, in music technology terms) where pianist Hugh Sung talks about a number of tablet PCs and foot pedals that he uses instead of printed sheet music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOR3E3RM5Es

To each his own, I suppose, but he seems to be doing ok with playing from a tablet PC.

I suppose where this could really make a difference is on the film scoring stage, especially if there are last minute changes (cues that change, picture editorial changes that weren't communicated to the composer / orchestrator). Obviously someone still has to change the notes in Sibelius but once that is done, the physical distribution to all the players is much faster. On the flip side, the audio reflections from the screen have to be accomodated for or you get funny (unintended) first reflections.

Somewhat related, by the way, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra is a relatively novel symphony, founded 10 years ago, to offer young musicians freshly graduated from the conservatory of music an opportunity to get their feet in a pro orchestra and from there, a jump into a career as a pro musician. An excellent initiative in my opinion, that deserves more attention in these difficult times (with vanishing orchestras).

Re the size of the parts: I finished an orchestra piece and laboriously prepared 10 x 13" parts from 11 x 17" paper and a paper cutter - only to have several orchestra members complain that the parts were too big, they wouldn't fit in the notebook of standard size music they'd prepared, etc. etc. Couldn't believe it, as I'm used to larger parts and hate standard sized-paper printouts. But, the times they are a-changin'...

I've commented elsewhere that I'm waiting for a 13" tablet, preferably with Windows 8, so I could at least run Sibelius on it as well as use a PDF reader/annotator to put a part on a music stand and play off it. So far, I'm using a 10" Android tablet to conduct choral music with a modicum of success (choral parts, being smaller anyway, do fit better in the tablet format).

And I've also said elsewhere - whoever comes up with a reasonably intuitive (and reasonably priced) iPad/Android app that allows music input and saving as a MusicXML file will make a killing. If Avid had half a brain, they'd put their former UK developers to work on that.

A church decided to use an overhead projector controlled remotely by a computer, for the congregation's use. It's quite common now. They also decided to get rid of hymn books as a result. Someone pointed out that such technology had a habit of crashing, *please don't lose the hymn books*. They lost the hymn books. 2 months later, in the middle of a srvice, the technology went bang right in the middle of a service.

I'm not saying anything, it's juat a pretty story. But books don't go bang.

If electronic parts are to become a universal standard, then a custom music stand dedicated to the job will be needed, and will inevitably be very expensive. There aren't that many orchestras and ensembles in the world to make its manufacture profitable at low cost.

The mention of changing bowings in string parts highlights the impracticality of the concept though. Conductors change bowings, markings, dynamics, even notes sometimes, on the fly*, and composers change all sorts of things when they hear their music for the first time making existing parts obsolete until edited. It's difficult to see how this could be a practical proposition.

I'm not saying it will never be possible, but at the moment I can't see how it can catch on in a big way, exciting though the prospect might be.

Derek

* Here is an example:
When I was Musical Director of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain we were fortunate enough to have Pierre Boulez conduct Gurrelieder at the Royal Albert Hall Proms in 1987. During the two week rehearsal period he found dozens of small mistakes in the score, which had been in existence unchanged for over 50 years.

The Freehand music pads have been used on tours of 'War of the Worlds' for some years. Some of the rhythm section parts are 10+ pages long - playing non-stop. When I first used them a stylus was needed to add markings, I see now that they advertise it as more 'finger' friendly.

On the plus side:

1) You can turn pages using foot switch or use the touch screen - you can also display the bottom half of one page and the top half of the next.
2) In the strings, the section leader has a master screen and the other desks are slaved to it so markings can be made and it appears on their screens. At the end of the day the amended parts can be downloaded and edited.

The downside:
1) Although an A4 page almost fits (with a slight reduction) there is little room for a blank border, so the music looks cramped.
2) The usual computer problems - uploading and downloading was time consuming. There was also an issue with charging the screens after storage. No doubt there has been or will be improvements in these areas.
I doubt that they would make the screens bigger just to accommodate blank space though!

In the videos it looks like as if they actually use the www.neoscores.com software; in case that it works like the example that you can try out on the website, I would say that this is a (well intentioned) mess and I couldn't imagine that it will be used in this way for long. The same goes actually for the tiny screen, which probably will become a nuisance as soon as the novelty has worn off. (The whole tablet is already a bit smaller than an A4 page, and the actual screen area is considerably smaller than this.)

With a considerably larger screen size and a concept that for once goes beyond "converting the music to a computer readable format" I think there are many possibilities here. It would actually be interesting to think about how sheet music should really be handled if it is to be more "flexible", so that with the new advantages the old ones of proper music preparation don't go out the window.

If I download a PDF of music from imslp for instance I'll try it out by putting my ipad on the music rack having a go. It's a bit confining for organ or piano music but single instrument lines are another matter. I've tried flute studies on the iPad and they are perfectly readable. And if I put music into Sib where I can format so that a page turn swipe is convenient all the better.

Hi, I have been reading the demise of Sibelius threads with interest. No one mentions Scorch!!!
I have used Scorch on an iPad for over a year and it could be good but it is very buggy and doesn't look like it will ever get fixed now.
I use Sibelius to format my scores and then write to PDF and play them in forScore. I use the bt 104 as a blue tooth page turner. Having the iPad in landscape mode with 8 staves on a sheet of A4, i have 4 staves on screen and it is fine to read. even in portrait mode, the iPad isn't too bad for a complete page of A4 if you have good eyesight. ForScore even gives partial page turns so you can see the top of the next page while you are still playing the bottom of the previous page. It does mean you can take hundreds of scores with you on a single device.
I much prefer this to paper and convert all my scores now and haven't played from a paper score in over a year.

Since nowadays I'm primarily a nerd who does a bunch of accompanying, I've thought on and off over the years about doing this ... but the thing that scares me is -- just as I'm about to hit that tricky passage the computer crashes :(

Having the music fall off the piano or tear when flipping the page is pretty recoverable. Waiting for a reboot whilst the audience (and the soloist) is waiting mid-flow doesn't appeal to me quite so much.

Interesting Sam. The scorch iOS site doesn't seem to be monitored by Avid so I'm glad I still monitor this one. I just hope you have fixed the bugs and include a set list feature. For those who want a large monitor check out cambron software site for examples

http://www.cambronsoftware.co.uk/

For those who consider musicians using tablets, check out the air turn site

http://airturn.com/

I can only say, I use an iPad weekly and have never had an issue with a live performance and haven't used paper scores for over 18 months now. I no longer suffer from odd sheets being blown or knocked off my music stand or accidentally taking the wrong sheet off or putting them on the wrong order, all of which I have experienced at some time over the previous years.
