Sib. 6.2: Protect file
Posted by Dave P-B - 18 Dec 10:30PM (edited 18 Dec 11:57PM)
Hi there,

This might be more of a Mac question than a Sibelius question.

Is there a way I can password-protect a Sibelius file to prevent it from saving any changes? Specifically, I'd like to send the file to another user who has Sibelius and that user can open the file and view/print as normal, but any changes that user makes, can not be saved without the password.

Thanks,
Dave

UPDATE

Further exploring with options in the Info window. What would be ideal is to be able to send a file that has the same limitations as Sibelius Demo mode. That is, the person who receives the file can alter but can not save. Perhaps on the wish list for the future?

Dave

Why not just send a PDF? Or even a Scorch file. If you really want to let them alter it, then just give them a copy. But they can print either of these options, and playback and transpose a Scorch.

I don't think there is any way to let them open a score in Sib without letting them change it.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I should have said that as a rule, I normally only send PDFs. In this case, I've been asked for the Sib file as well (the client has just purchased Sibelius) and it doesn't make me feel comfortable to send the Sib file. I've been contracted to provided an arrangement and that arrangement bears my name at the top of the page. therefore, I don't want anybody else to alter it without me being able to approve it.
It sort of feels like asking a tradesman to build a shed for you and then also ask that he leave his tools behind.

The Scorch file is a great idea.

Thanks,
Dave

I'm afraid there's no good way of locking a Sibelius file such that it can be opened in Sibelius but can't be edited. This is on our wish list for future versions.

In Windows, after you save the file, you can R-click on the file, then on Properties and then check Read Only. The catch is that if they open the file and then save it under a new name, that file is now editable. Not sure if Mac has the same options.

Can I add that I would like a read only option for staves/ systems.
I am a music teacher and I sometimes give students sibliues scores to analyse cadences chords interval patterns etc and being able to lock the stave/system/ notes would be very helpful
