Sib. 6.1: ASIO freezing sib
Posted by Søren Jepsen - 23 Feb 07:49PM
Just got sib 6.1, and installed it last night. Tried a few things and went to bed. This morning, sib won't start. So I try replacing portaudio_x86.dll - nothing changes.

Portaudio, hmm......on a hunch I close the software running my soundcard (Creamware Powersampler). This disables the drivers.

Now Sib starts (complaining there's no soundcard) and I can get into the Audio Engine Options. I close sib, restart soundcard software, and starts sib. So far so good, however!

When I select the ASIO drivers for the soundcard (SCOPE ASIO) sib freezes.....sigh......

What is going on with sibelius and connecting to ASIO? My soundcard works with various other software just fine...

Regards
Soren

Hi Soren,

Try to check for a Driver update for your soundcard. And install that if possible.

I can't understand the methodology behind. . . [>replacing portaudio_x86.dll.] Did you see that in a Sibelius Tech Document? or, just your own idea?. . . I'm just curious?

Regardless I'd try to update your SoundCard's driver and then see what happens from there.

(the reason I suggest this is because if Sibelius hangs, or crashes during sound initialization of a setting change, chances are it's caused by the device driver's).

Take Care,

Jim

Try switching off 'Record system exclusive data' on the Input Devices page of Preferences. Sometimes when Sibelius won't restart, it's because the *MIDI* device is stuck open, not the ASIO device.

Hi Daniel.

It's not that Sibelius won't restart. It simply freezes when the ASIO device on my soundcard is selected.

I did try what you described, but nothing changed :-(

Hi Jim.

Thanks for your reply. In the box with the DVD there was a leaflet describing this, with a link to sibelius helpcenter where you can download a this file.

The drivers are part of the software controlling my soundcard. I can connect any incomming signal, to any software running on the soundcard DSP's, and then again connect it to any type of output (ASIO among others). This also counts midi signals.

I believe the drivers are connecting the hardware to this controling software. The interfacing with other software is then done thru software "interfaces" running on this controling software.

Look here:

Hi Soren,

Good, my worry was that you were going on a hunch (which would be fine by me), and that perhaps you didn't have the 'Full Set' of drivers in selecting just that single .dll file. (It's not always just a single .dll file that comprises the drivers as a whole). Anyhow you're following the advice from those who should know best, but sadly it's not working out yet. And worse than that I don't have any good tips either, because I'm not familiar with your components.

I'll be watching from the background on this, and I hope that you can find a solution that doesn't require you having to replace your Sonic Device, in order to get good integration with Sibelius.

Take Care, and Good Luck,

Jim

Could you check that in the Scope routing you have the main software
outputs routed to a physical output? I had a Creamware card on my
system a few years ago and I had no end of problems with it that I never
totally got to the bottom of.

Hi Paul.

I have tried different setups. I tried with only the basic stuff:

Wave (from pc software) and ASIO 24 bit source into the mixer, and out to physical output. I have also 2 software midi in and outs, and hardware midi in and out.

Now the weird part. I installed asio4all as a workaround. It's not my preference, but I need to get some work done. This worked ok. Then today, I tried once more. Sibelius starts fine with the asio4all drivers. I have SCOPE set up as mentioned, only I removed the Physical input.

I change to SCOPE in Sibelius, and behold....it works.

Well, not really. I wanted to be shure, so I close Sibelius, and start it again. Guess what: sibelius hangs when the "Initializing playback devices" appears.

To be sure, I play a wave file thru media player without problems, so the SCOPE software is running fine.

*SIGH*

I don't think the Media Player ever uses ASIO.

True. So following I tried out Chainer, Minihost and VSTHost. In all three programs I had no problem with ASIO.

I've had a bit more time to test it now. I can get ASIO working (most of the time), IF I start Sibelius with the asio4all driver, end then switch to SCOPE. Then before closing Sibelius I switch back. If I don't switch back, Sibelius hangs on startup as described (and mentioned in the leaflet from the Sibelius box).

There seems to be some issue with that portausio dll file. Maybe this has something to do with my problems too?

Which portaudio file are you running with? The one that Sibelius was shipped with, or the one available for download in http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/en/a549?

Hi Daniel.

As mentioned in my first post, the first thing I tried was downloading the new file from Sibelius. That's the file still beeing used.

Now that you have been changing your configuration via SCOPE etc., I think it would be worth reverting to the original file, which presumably you have backed up.

I tried with both the original and the new one, with no change. Sibelius still freezes with the "Initializing playback system" splashscreen.

And still SCOPE isn't crashing, as I can load vst instruments and play them in various hosting software.

Can you zip up the PlogueEngine folder in your application data folder (you don't specify whether you're running Windows XP or something later, but on XP it's at C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6) and email it to me?

Unfortunately we don't have a Creamware Powersampler, and nor are we likely to get one, I'm afraid, so there's a limited amount we'll be able to do to troubleshoot this. But we'll do what we can to help, of course!

Hello everybody, since much years I have the same Problems.
Sibelius runs only with the asio4all Driver and after I start another Audio application (eg Samplitude). This is an unsatisfactory situation.
I wish you´ll try to solve this problem. Rewire also doesn´t run . I´m working since many years with audio Programms but only sibelius didn´t find the ASIO SCOPE Driver.

Yours sincerely,
Bodo Schön

Right -- very high-end gear that I'm afraid we don't have available for testing. I assume you are using the most up-to-date drivers available for your hardware?

Hi Daniel,
yes of course. The SCOPE-Plattform includes many Drivers from ASIO1-16 bit to ASIO2-Float for 32-bit recording. I tried out all.

The german suport, Mister Paulwitz, had the following Idea:
Send a Sibelius-Demo-version to the Sonic Core support, with the request to sove the Problem. See what happens. I'll try my luck.

Yours sincerely,
Bodo
