"Inspector"
Posted by Adriano Baumann - 14 Dec 02:30PM
Sorry, but the new "Inspector" feature is not very heplful and too complicated.
How, for example, can I move a barline to the end of its bar because it comes earlier - as a result of a hidden time signature change? In the past, one just had to click this particular barline, choose "inspector" in the appearing dialogue field and move the barline by clicking the X-/Y box to the end.
But now, after selecting this barline and clicking "inspector", nothing really helpful to that appears...

... and now, after closing my score and re-opening it, the "old" inspector option suddenly re-appears...

Yes, Adriano, while your copy of Sib was closed, one of the extra-terrestrial angels from Avid jumped in and reinstated the function. If you look under your pillow tonight, you may also find a silver thrup'ny bit that wasn't there before.

Hi Adrian
Thanks! If I find the silver coin under my pillow, I will certainly let you know :-)
And I hope that you or some of your colleagues will help as far as my "aleatoric lines" posting is concerned; if this will be the case, I will call them "angels"

I have no idea what you mean. There have been no changes to the Inspector for several years. No new features.

Perhaps you have omitted to use the "Reset Note Spacing" feature.

And that is a shame.

Hi Robin :-)
I mean that, when you have a time signature taking place just before the start of a new "movement" (separated by "end" barlines) with a different time signature, this signature appears already at the end of the previous "movement" - and should be hidden (I know how). In other words, the last barline of the ending movement appears misplaced because the new time signature (visible or hidden) needs its place too. So this barline needs to be moved with the help of the inspector till the end of the staves. And I cannot find in the "new" inspector dialoge field this application. And the "reset" note spacing feature does not help at all in this case.
Unfortunltely, in such a "time signature change in between two movements" case, Sibelius still requires setting a "text" signature change, in order the new change can be made visible at the new movement's start. I am struggling since years for a more practical alternative.
See page 4, last bar, of the enclosed score (which, incidentally still needs aleatoric waving lines in some bars).
Would I be the composer of this piece, I would set everything more logicallly (and in an easier way), but the composer is the king...

The score attached above has a number of errors in it.

1. If you wish to have a new Time Signature at the start of a new movement without a cautionary Time Signature appearing at the end of the previous movement, then, in the Time Signature Gallery, click "More options", uncheck "Allow cautionary", and choose the Time Signature in this dialogue (rather than from the Gallery). This had not been done in the attached score, which was an error.

2. In the attached score, the true Time Signature at the start of the new movement had been "hidden", which was an error, and unnecessary if the true Time Signature had been created without a cautionary.

3. In the attached score, the hidden true Time Signature at the start of the new movement had been overwritten with fake Time Signature text, which was an error, and unnecessary, as the true Time Signature does not need to be hidden.

Hi Robin
Super, many thanks! But this was the procedure I was told years ago, (sorry, my fault!), so I should have bothered resarching whether it had been improved in the meantime. You must consider that I am almost a pre-historic Sibelius user - from the 1980s, a time Sibelius was only running on Acorn computers... And before that I was working on a tiny Macintosh machine with a programme called "Notator". I may have figured amongst the first Swiss using Sibelius...
I work with notation programs because I need to work and don't always like to spend hours and hours studying and searching new devices/apps...Learning by doing is my device, but at the same time I am a very impatient person... So the things I did wrong were all other than "errors"; they still worked. "Not knowing" is not "wrong doing" :-)

There have been no changes to the Inspector for several years.
===============================================

It used to be called Properties, and I still use ctrl+alt+p to summon it. When I see Inspector, for some reason, I think of the Fat Controller from Thomas the Tank Engine. Daniel had some good ideas, but this was the daftest of his changes.
