Audio Score Light Versus Ultimate: What's The Difference?
Posted by Annabelle S. Morison - 14 Dec 10:22AM
Hi, it's Annabelle.
Out of curiosity, what are the differences between Audio Score Light and Audio Score Ultimate? I tried transcribing audio of a piano part in Audio Score Light, but instead of chords, I get broken notes all over the place. Does Audio Score Light not transcribe chords from single instruments? 😕

AudioScore works best with non-polyphonic instruments.

I wonder what could work with polyphonic instruments.

Best bet is the #1 ear/brain combination. I've not seen good results from any software when it tries analysing polyphonic music, especially multi-instrumental pieces.

If anyone has proof positive of software that does work well, I'll be delighted to update my opinion!

I use Transcribe for transcribing. It's easier than working from a gramophone, tape recording or mp3 as I'm able to mark the bar numbering to match my score, but I still have to use my ear and musical brain to analyse what I hear. What does Audio Score do that my ear can't?

Try for free Capella Audioscore5. I find it useful.

1. Is this Capella Audio2Score accessible to screenreaders?
2. Will it let you save a score as a .sib file?

As most high density jazz harmony uses root position chords, when transcribing by ear, it helps especially to listen to the rhythm section bass, tho' this depends on how expert the player is at reading from a chord sheet. In walking or running bass patterns, the chord root is normally played at the start of a chord change. Once the root has been recognized, there are four basic types of chord to identify (major 7th, minor 7th, dominant 7th, diminished 7th). These basic types will often contain extended intervals (9th, 11th, 13th) or altered intervals (raised or lowered 5ths or 9ths) or suspensions or replacement chord tones (maj.6th for maj.7th). Then there is common practice harmony and simple pop & country music which use chord inversions. Is there really an app that can deal with all this better than a human transcriber?
