How to create a half diminished symbol with Roman Numerals?
Posted by JMComposer - 05 Dec 03:02AM (edited 05 Dec 03:02AM)

I'd like to create a iiø7 that looks like a proper Roman Numeral analysis where the half diminished 7th is a small superscript. How do I do this?

1. Option-o gives me a humongous symbol.

2. Control-clicking opens a list of symbols, but the half diminished symbol is not in the list.

iiø7 looks fine to me even tho' the ø character originated as a jazz symbol rather than Roman figuration. I'm thinking simply vii7 in major key or ii7 in minor key indicates a half diminished chord tho' I may be wrong. Using chord symbol text, the ø character (type [shft][ctrl]o) appears in superscript by default. R-clicking during input displays the word menu for me which includes the ø character.

Thank you Adrian, I think it might be different on a Mac, or perhaps my version is different, but here's what I've now figured out:

I. If Using Roman Numeral Text:

---> While the cursor is active, hold control and click. That opens a menu with a list of symbols. What's tricky is that the diminished and half diminished symbols are invisible in the list, but they are attached to specific key commands (it's just that the space next to the key commands are blank). To get the diminished symbol, the key command is Cmd-o (the letter "o", not the number 0), and to get the half-diminished symbol, the key command is Shift-Cmd-o.

II. If Using Chord Symbol Text:

---> While the cursor is active, press Opt-"o" (the letter "o", not the number 0). Although the half diminished symbol doesn't initially appears as a superscript, once you click off the text, it magically turns into a superscript.

Hope this helps someone using a Mac.

In Windows, I can also get the delta character for maj.7 on [shft]6 (or ^) in chord symbol text. I can't remember if this is a shipped shortcut or one of my own making.

Indeed Adrian, the Shift-6 does get me a triangle in Chord Symbols (on a Mac), but the curious thing is that it doesn't work properly when I do the Cmd-K to get the chord symbol (it'll give me a caret instead of a triangle). It only works when I right click and go into the Text-->Special Text menu. Oh well...

Have you looked in File>Preferences>WordMenus>ChordsStandard? Delta superscript should be allocated to Shft+6 and Delta base line to Alt+Shft+6. Also slashed ø superscript on Shft+Ctrl+o & baseline on Alt+Shft+Ctrl+o. (or Mac equivalent).

Yes, everything is there as it should be in those preferences. It's just that for some odd reason when I use the key command Cmd-K for "chord symbol" those symbols don't work.

It's only when I access the feature through the
Text-->Special Text-->Chord Symbol menu that all those symbols work.

It's really weird why Cmd-K won't work the same way.

Actually, I see a clue to what the problem might be...

When I use Cmd-K for Chord Symbol, I'm getting the text Format as "1st and 2nd Ending," and it's greyed out, so I can't change it.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?
