Unexpected page size
Posted by Patrick O'Keefe - 28 Nov 09:53PM
I just discovered that all parts of a piece were using "A4" page size. I've never intentionally chosen page size A4 for anything. Is there a default page size option somewhere? (If so, I must have recently accidentally changed it.)

Is page size something that gets imported in House Styles? If so, is there some way to display all attributes in a given house style? If this size is in a custom House Style I want to fix it; if this size is in a Sibelius-provided House Style I definitely want to avoid using it.

Preferences/Files. Possibly the US/European option has been flipped?

Thanks. I should have looked there, but it wouldn't have mattered. US was still selected. And the A4 was set only for parts. The full score used "Concert" (which I've heard some organizations demand and which scales nicely to US letter for those that don't demand Concert).

I just tried creating a new piano score. (I usually start by exporting as score from something already existing, but I wanted something completely new for this test.) It used Letter for the score but A4 for the (unneeded) part. I then imported my usual House Style. That changed the score to Concert but the part stayed A4.

I'm currently running 2024.6.1. Maybe I'd better upgrade to 2024.10 and see if it acts better.

It is not the current version of Sibelius that matters for default Part page size.

It is the original Manuscript Paper from which the score was created that determines the Page Size of Dynamic Parts. Maybe your score was created from a shipping Manuscript Paper many years ago.

The Page Size of Parts being A4 was a bug that was fixed many years ago.

I'm going to need some help applying what you said to what I saw in the test I ran yesterday. I'm obviously missing something.

I created a new score using the Quick Start "Solo Piano" template (which I guess is a "manuscript page"). I immediately went to the part and checked it's size - it was A4. Does that mean I've somehow corrupted the Sibelius-supplied Solo Piano manuscript page? If so, is there a way to fix it?

BTW, I went to the Manuscripts folder and opened a couple of the files - Piano and String Quartet. A4 in the parts.

That's interesting. In my Sibelius 2024.10, a score created from the supplied Solo Piano manuscript paper doesn't HAVE any Parts (although it's easy enough to create one if you want to).

Anyway. You know you can go to Parts/Part Appearance/All Parts and change the size to either 'Same as score' or another chosen size?

I don't have Solo Piano in my 2024.10 Ultimate Quick Start, tho' I can add it to the blank template, and it does have a part, but why do I need one when there is only one instrument on the full score? Both score and part are on A4 and 7mm staff size.

It appears that the old bug, once fixed, has now returned, with effect from version number 2022.3.

All system-provided Manuscript Papers are once again producing European page sizes in Dynamic Parts, when U.S. sizes are selected in Preferences -> "Files" -> "Default Page Size". The default page size in the Full Score follows the Preference setting correctly.

I did not think this plugin would be needed again, but if you install the plugin Page Size Score and Parts and run it on a score, it will change the page sizes and units (inch, mm, etc) for one or more scores in the full score, parts and/or subsets. See the plugin dialog in the screenshot.

Hmm. The comments say that plugin can be applied to a folder of scores. If that folder just happened to be
C:\ProgramData\Avid\Sibelius\Resources\en.lproj\Manuscript Paper
then that might fix the problem for newly created scores ... although I don't think I'll try that without having a backup handy.

The contents of that folder have not been used since before version 2022.3.

From 2022.3 onward, Manuscript Papers are generated dynamically on-the-fly, and not from any supplied resource.

You could apply the plugin to *user* manuscript paper folders if any of them have the same problem

I would like to have A4 as my default on the Quick Start page, but it's always letter. A4 is the standard here. I've been searching all over for a solution to try to change the default. Is there any way to solve this? Thank you

Preferences -> "Files" -> "Default Page Size" -> "European"
