During the creation of a voice/guitar piece, the swing option functioned normally for both voice and guitar. Then at seemingly random passages, the 8ths lose their swing feel and play absolutely straight. What might cause this, and how can it be corrected?

Perhaps a text item that contains the word 'straight', or 'rock' or any term that describes a feel other than Swing?

But yes, attaching the score will get you a definite answer, quicker.

Does the direction for swing come from Performance or from the Playback dictionary? I seem to remember that a text direction overrides whatever is selected in Performance.

OK. If you switch off live playback, swing is restored thru'out the score. There is no need for the metric modulation at the start, unless this is musicians who don't know swing, tho' it makes no difference to performance. Swing says it all.

Thanks for this solution, Adrian. But why is swing dependent on live playback being turned off? In one version of this piece, swing works throughout, with live playback on. See attached. Very confusing.

You have different playback settings in the Inspector between the two examples you posted. You have two options. Either turn off Live Playback on the ribbon, because you don't need it. Or Select All in the score, open the Inspector and uncheck Live Position and Live Duration.

I need live playback so I can view note properties like velocity, and especially note durations, since their values don't always match their type. For example, half notes often have 128 or 1024 values, quarter notes sometimes have 128 or 512 instead of the normal value of 256. Don't have a clue what causes this. I use Sibelius 6.2.Perhaps it is is getting old and tired?

I don't have a ribbon, and not sure how find the "inspector". What might it be called Sibelius ^6? What is the setting that allows swing and live playback together?

Yes, Anastasio, I understand. I too have live playback switched on all the time as I often need to halve the duration of quarter notes with hat accents. Regarding your score, I found switching it off was the only way to bring your swing performance back to life. 'Properties' became renamed 'Inspector' in version 7 for some stupid reason. It came with the equally stupid ribbon. Mark was sensible enough to stick with v6. I still use the shortcut ctrl/alt/p to open properties (sorry, I mean inspector).
