I wonder whether there is a way to indicate, in a piano score, the use of the sostenuto pedal (the third pedal)(not the sustain pedal, for which the 'Ped.' indication is used). Is a specific symbol known for this? Can sostenuto be taken into account when playing the music?
And you can create your own symbol for it, based on one of the Pedal Lines already in the program. Don't expect it to play back as if it were the actual sostenuto pedal.
This pedal is sorely negelected with understanding, even amongst pianists, who often don't even know its name and just call it "the middle pedal". Adding confusion to ignorance is the fact that many upright pianos have a "middle pedal" that performs the entirely different function of muting the piano by dropping cloth between the hammers and strings, to ameliorate neighbour disturbance.
