Viena Ensemble Pro 7 listing disappeared in play-back Available Active Devices.
Posted by Donald Dillon - 22 Sep 12:48PM
I'm in the process of loading Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 in my Sib Untimate and the VEP listing in play-back "available active devices" has disappeared. What do I need to do to reload it?

Please attach screen-shots (in .png format) of the following Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. "Playback Devices";
2. "Audio Engine Options";
3. The "Folders" dialogue within "Audio Engine Options".

Please clarify "the VEP listing in play-back "available active devices" has disappeared": if you are only just installing VEP, why should VEP have been listed before?

The requested files are attached. I wasn't very clear, so let me try again. I installed Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 several days ago and have been trying, without any success, to get it configured. I've used Sibelius for several years, but this is my first attempt to expand my sound options and I'm afraid I'm floundering.

When I first loaded VEP there was something appropriate listed in the playback devices space, but in my efforts to configure I must have clicked the wrong thing and it is now gone. I assume one of the initial files needs to be reloaded, but I don't know which. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Looks like only one attachment came through. Here's another.

> And here's the third.

Both the entries in the Folders list look incorrect, on the face of it.
The first because that looks like the location of the stand-alone application, rather than the location of VST DLLs.
The second because (a) Sibelius is a 64-bit application, and cannot use VSTs intended for 32-bit applications (as in "x86"), AND (b) Sibelius cannot use VST3 plug-ins. It can only use VST 2.4 plug-ins.

Question for you:

To what folder location did VEP 7 install its VST (not VST3) DLLs?

That is the only correct entry to have in the "Folders" list.

I don't know how I could cause more problems, but I just did. It appeared all the .DLLs were located in the Vienna Assistant file, so I added it to the Folders. Now Sibelus won't open (See attachment). This could drive a person to drink. What can I do now to boot Sibelius?

The VST DLLs cannot be located inside a "file". By making incorrect settings in "Folders", you can prevent Sibelius from launching, as you have discovered. To get out of that situation:

- ensure Sibelius is fully quit;
- open a Windows Command Prompt window;
- at the command prompt, type PRECISELY (or copy and paste):

reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius\Preferences\Configuration\PluginEngineOptions\PluginPath64

all on one line (every space and every character is significant), and press ENTER.
- agree to the deletion;
- in the event of an error, attach a screen-shot of the command line you typed and the system response;
- if successful, now try launching Sibelius.

Please find out from the VEP 7 specification or documentation exactly where the VST files are located on disk. Do not guess. Usually, for such a product, the Installer will pause to inform you where it intends to install the VDST DLL files, so that you can note down that location for subsequent use in hosts such as Sibelius. Or sometimes, there is an auxiliary application that you can launch to discover the VST locations.
