June 2023 Release Now Available! Introducing data-driven AI model for harmonic analysis on desktop
Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 22 Jun 06:04PM
Hi All,

We're incredibly excited to announce the immediate release of Sibelius 2023.6, our June update and our 7th feature release in the last 12 months.

In this release, you can expect to see:

• Brand new AI powered data-driven workflows for harmonic analysis to assist chord symbol entry
• Chord symbols are now suggested in real-time based on our brand new AI model
• Use your familiar shortcuts to enter chord symbols and remain in complete control
• And take advantage of many enhancements, improvements, and fixes across the app

You can read all about how the features work in my blog, here: https://www.avid.com/resource-center/whats-new-in-sibelius-june-2023

For those interested in how it was put together and what's happening under the hood, I encourage you to read the technical overview to: https://www.avid.com/resource-center/data-driven-workflows-within-sibelius

The new AI feature is only available on Windows and Mac, although the update to the mobile app contains a number of useful improvements too.

You can download the updates from your account at https://my.avid.com/products.

Enjoy!

Sam and the Sibelius team

Some of us have already been obsolete for quite a while.

The phrase "brand new AI powered data-driven workflows for harmonic analysis" sounds like it was built by a buzz-word generator (which is AI, I guess). I wonder if this this brand new AI is just some hard-coded logic or if there is data harvesting process collecting real-time information about our composing styles (either individually or collectively) and sending the data to Avid. If the former, it's a bit disingenuous to call it AI; if the latter, there had better be some way to turn off that data collection.

If you read the release notes you will find that both your suppositions are false.

Anyone compared the new chord-guessing with the old 'Add chord symbols' plugin yet?

I have. Basically, the AI can't do sus2, sus4, add2 or 9 etc. It's meat and potatoes. The Add Chord Symbols is far more accurate.

I think there is hope, and will be useful. I think the use will be suggesting alternate chords that might be interesting and might help those without a jazz background. The whole "confidence" thing is not there yet. There are simple chords and the confidence level is 'high' and it's just not the right chord. Hopefully it will keep improving.

I can't find the "Add Chord Symbols"-plugin. And also not "Add simple harmony" (that was mentioned in a another thread).
Where is it?

I like the new AI-powered system, it's nice to have them when adding chord symbols.
2 suggestions though:
- I would like to have this also for single melody note based on the current key signature.
- skipping a proposal should be easier. It shouldn't require pressing "del" then space but perhaps only ctrl-space or a better idea.

Thanks for trying it out. The original plugin is not obsolete, as it knows about more types of chords, but doesn't have the same awareness to the musical context, and it needs chords to be written out for it to pick anything up that's usable. We expect the plugin to get less usage over time though as we improve the model.

See attached a comparison showing the new model being able to pick up the harmony of the music, compared to the plugin that doesn't (when running the plugin on the lower passage, I had to untick "Only write chords with at least 3 distinct notes").

Adrian - yes, you can continue to use the legacy chord symbol input. Just choose this in File > Preferences > Other.

I cant see what the benefit is of this at all, surely if you know what you are doing you wont need suggestions and you can just as easily just select the chord and be done with it. if you dont know what your doing the suggestion will be no help whatsoever.

You can't use the AI with legacy input. It only works with sibelius' standard chord input.

=======================================================

Thanx, Sam, but I don't need to get it from Preferences. I assigned Ctrl/K many years ago to take me direct to Text Style Chord Symbols which I have edited to my liking. Have used nothing else since Sib7-Acorn, and gives me everything I need except for back editing. That is an improvement I would dearly love to see from Avid.

I'm afraid AI chord symbol guessing is no use to me. I normally have the chords in my mind before I start to write the notes.
