Symbols (resize?)
Posted by monsterjazzlicks - 30 Jan 02:32PM
Hi folks,

Please find attached score.

If you look at bars A6, B6, and D6 (in the horn parts) you will see the 'scoop' symbol. I would really like to resize these (ie. larger), please. I get so far but I'll be damned if I can locate the window which includes the adjustable 'dimensions' of the icon?! I have resized similar symbols in the past (eg. the breath-comma a couple of years ago), so maybe my memory is hazy and I'm simply cocking it up!; but I honestly don't remember it being THAT complicated?

Many thanks in advance for any kind assistance offered here.

Best,

See https://www.scoringnotes.com/tips/how-to-enlarge-symbols-in-sibelius/

That was written for the user interface of Sibelius 6, but the same principles apply in more modern versions of Sibelius.

Hi Robin,

Wow, thanks for the fast response!

I honestly have not heard of 'Scoring Notes' before? I did check the 'other' Sibelius forum but the suggested steps did not seem to work for me (Sebastian):

https://www.sibeliusforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3228

Cheers,

Those instructions are for creating a NEW symbol of enlarged size: they are not instructions for changing the size of an EXISTING symbol.

The only way I know of how to enlarge a symbol is to make a copy of the text style from which it originates, enlarge the font size and save the new text style under a different name. The scoop and other jazz artics are in Special Symbols. Once you have saved the new text style, edit the symbol and select the new text style under Music font.

Hey Ade,

Many thanks!

I'll be trying these out later this evening...

As a side note, this is why I commented in the thread 'The Ribbon, and the Future!' how it would be nice to allow resizing of any object in the inspector - to make an easy and consistent user experience.

The Scoring Notes website is a great resource for news, information and how-to articles about music notation software.

Hi Jarrell,

That's handy to know, thanks. As I say, I was truly unaware of it before!

You seem to be using a manually-placed Symbol. If you use the Scoop from Keypad 5 it will at least attach correctly to the notehead.

But if you're GOING to use a manually-placed scoop, it might as well be a text character rather than a Symbol, then you can resize it freely.

A little digging in the Symbol editor shows that Scoop uses a character in the Text Style 'Special symbols', further digging in the Text Styles editor tells us this uses the font 'Inkpen2 Special Std'. Pull that font up in the Windows Character Map, paste it into your score, position and size it.

OK, that's a lot of work. Here's a score containing the scoop as a text character. Open it alongside your score and you can copy/paste the character across.

. . . I took me about 45 mins but I was able to make a certain amount of headway. I actually struggled a bit with the 'scoring notes' article (sorry Robin!). So I tried Adrian's method and I managed to get further.

However, during the process I inadvertently created two too many 'Special Symbols' fonts. :-( How, please, do I delete these two superfluous fonts?

Hi Laurence,

Gee, thanks for all of that work. There is absolutely no way on earth I would ever achieve such insight.

It does seem to be a big runaround for something that really should not be that difficult, I feel - as per Jarrell.

When you mention "Keypad 5" do you mean as per screengrab? I don't see it, sorry

Cheers,

Paul

Hi LP,

The scoop is great, thanks! However, it's a little too big, sorry. I don't understand how I am able to resize it, please?

(How on earth did you manage to delete to two unwanted fonts I had unwittingly created? I tried for 40 mins!).

Much appreciated.

LP - Oh I got it now! In the Text tab. It appears it's in 'regular' text. Cheers.

It's a text character. Make it any size you like. Select it and there's a box in both the Text tab and the Inspector. Note that the font has been changed from the default for Plain Text.

Thanks a lot, Laurence! OK, I see, yes, 'Plain Text'. But I would not have noticed to be honest!

I have reduced the font size to '27.6'.

I've been sat on the PC since 2pm (I had to do a college assignment which took about 5 hours), followed by 3 hours on Sib. (getting nowhere!!!). But I'm really glad I persevered and for the kind assistance here. ;-)

Cheers.

It's so easy to create a new text style, in this case, based on special symbols, saved as special symbols large (or whatever you want to call it), and assign the new text style to each of the jazz artics. I have increased my font size from 19.5 pt to 36.0 pt relative to 7mm staff, which is almost double sib's puny default. And I have assigned shortcuts [backslash] for fall, [forward-slash] for scoop, [shift-backslash] for plop, [shift-forward-slash] for doit. I really don't know why you want to mess about trying to use text characters.

There are actually some limited sizes available for symbols from the symbol table. You can choose the size when you add a symbol, use the More Options dialog, or you can later run the installable plugin Resize Symbols to change existing symbol sizes.Unfortunately you can only make the symbols smaller, not larger this way.

Hi Bob,

Yes, unfortunately I'm looking to increase the size of glyphs etc. But thanks for your input here.

Hi Ade,

"19.5 pt to 36.0 pt" - wow, that's an appreciable amount! In saying that, though, I would much prefer things to be too large rather than too small.

Cheers.

Paul seemed to be having trouble doing it the 'proper' way. So I offered him a freely resizable 'symbol' that he could copy/paste directly from my sample score.
