September 2022 Release Now Available! Staff Names and Select Matching Object
Posted by Justin at Sibelius - 29 Sep 04:55PM (edited 29 Sep 05:19PM)
Hi All,

We're delighted to announce the immediate availability of our September release of Sibelius! This started out as a bug-fix release for the team to work on over the summer, and we managed to complete a great feature too.

In this release, you'll find:

* Introducing Staff names! You can now add labels to individual staves in your score. Simply double tap to the left of the staff to add the text. Show where to enter staff names by turning on Hidden Objects

* Select next matching object with new commands to help you navigate the score - great for navigating through chord symbols, rehearsal mark, and of course it ties nicely into our screen reader support

* Input Maps have been fixed up to allow you to control the mixer once more and, in some cases, navigate the score using your MIDI keyboard

* Improvements to Dynamic Guitar Staves, Sibelius Cloud Sharing, Note spacing/Auto-Optimize, Text, Command Search, Dynamic Parts, Video feature, Navigation, Key signatures and barlines, Playback Dictionary

* Plus, we've included Lili Boulanger’s Vieille prière bouddhique as a new example score. It’s great to show off how flexible and precise Sibelius can be when laying out dense and complex large format scores.

* A plethora of stability improvements, along with a new reliable crash reporting system across Windows, Mac and iOS. If Sibelius crashes, you’ll be able to opt into sending the crash report to us, where we’ll collect and analyse the crashes as they happen. This will enable us to ensure the future of Sibelius is even better and more stable than it is today.

This update spans across all tiers of Sibelius on all our supported platforms and is available to those with a current subscription or update and support plan.

If you're on an older version, you can upgrade and get current, here: https://www.avid.com/sibelius/upgrades-and-renewals

For all the details, please head over to the blog, that dives into staff names and all these other improvements, which we hope you enjoy.

Oh ... staff names is a fantastic improvement, the workaround is so tedious!!

And support for midi keyboards is very cool as well.

Thanks Justin and team.

i think there might be a slight mistake on your more information page

https://www.avid.com/resource-center/whats-new-in-sibelius-september-2022

Select next matching object vertically
Mac: Cmd + Shift + Option + .
Win: Ctrl + Shift + Option + .

Select previous matching object vertically
Mac: Cmd + Shift + Option + ,
Win: Ctrl + Shift + Option + ,

im guessing for windows this should show ctrl + shift + Alt + [,/.]

also it seems lilli boulenger is missing in example scores.

This update looked most attractive in the email announcing it. Sadly, the Update button seems to be deficient in that no update has taken place despite the supply of System Id information etc etc. What am I missing??

Please clarify, with appropriate screen-shots, including the "Products" page of the application "Avid Link" on your computer.

The mixer is broken. it is not adjustable and preset for Noteperformer doesn't work. In this screenshot solo soprano doesn't keep its volume and it goes so down as you see it here. I found up a work-around: made a 2nd solo soprano then it kept its volume but when I removed the unnesessary one the result is the same bad one.
I have imac intel macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Please clarify "preset for Noteperformer doesn't work." What is a "preset"? What actually happens instead when you try?

For assistance with playback problems, please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates the problem.

Problems with volume levels changing on one channel can be caused by a faulty attached MIDI controller keyboard. Please completely disconnect any such keyboard, close Sibelius and re-launch Sibelius, and try again.

preset is plugin "reset mixer for NotePerformer". Itried other kind of scores and the problem seems to be the very first instrunent in yhe score. For me it happens with any score. Here is a large oechestra and the first instrument is not in the rigjt volume.
If I try manually adjust the volume it goes itself to this position you see here.
I have had the same usb-keyboard for many years and this issue game with this last update.
I'll try your trick...
There is no point to attach a sib file because this happens with any file -even with solo instrument!

when I switch the power off from my keyboard (M-audio keystation 49e) the issue doesn't exist.
Power on and the first instrument is "down".
Would be nice not to need buy a new usb-keyboard because of this update.

Plese attach a screen-shot of Sibelius Preferences -> "Input Devices".

I noticed that adding instrument moves the place where the not funtioning instrument is. So it is not necessary the first instrument. But it's always the first instrument if I open a new score (made by sib)

Juha, please see the following sections of the Sibelius Reference:
3.13 Input Devices
3.24 HyperControl

The Sibelius Mixer is being driven by certain sliders and knobs on the MIDI keyboard, through the HyperControl protocol. This has been re-enabled in version 2022.9, after having not worked since version 6.2.

You might be able to disable HyperControl in your keyboard configuration settings, or you might be able to set the sliders or knobs on your keyboard to adjust the volume levels in the Sibelius Mixer the way you want them.

Tkanks for advice, but cannot finf anything useful. I wonder why only one instrument at the time doesn't "work". I find it quite anfair to change it this way. There should be a checbox for previous system. I'm quite sure I'm not the onlyone having problems with this? How can I downgrade to 2022.7 version?

There might be a bug. When using 'paste as cue" there is no name of the cued instrument.

Actually it might be even worse than that. I pasted a cue and it's invisible, it's there but only if I click on it.

Juha,

Could you let me know of some way of communicating directly with you, so that we can exchange files?

I might have a solution for you to test.

Do you have a Facebook account, for instance?

Hi All,

Yes we're aware the Boulanger example is missing from the update. We're also aware of the Paste as Cue issue. We're looking into a solution.

I am hoping the solution isn't "it's broken and that's that". I'm trying to be patient and understanding
about it, but I write symphony charts and use a lot of cues. I really hope that Avid takes this seriously. We pay good money for this program, under the premise that it will actually work.

Is there more info in the reference guide on the new Staff Names function. When I search there are only 2 places in there that seem to use that term (according to the search function in Preview).

When I tried to change the staff name in an existing score by double-clicking on the new blue box, anything I wrote was additional to what was already there. I needed to remove the existing staff name - but this was then removed from the part.

So obviously I need to RTFM, somehow.

Thanks
Matthew

You may have added new instrument name options, but you lost the Instrument cue label. This is a major problem.
