transport doesn't move
Posted by notabene - 22 Apr 08:31PM
I have had many terrible work stopping issues with Sibelius ultimate. Now the transport doesn't play, or move the cursor. I've been at my (half) wits end for weeks. Any help would be appreciated.
I've used Sibelius for decades with very few problems. Now I dread opening it to work.

Your score is refusing to play because it's embarrassed about the note spellings in bar 17, 19, 21... :-)

But, seriously, it plays OK here. I was expecting to find a broken repeat structure preventing playback, but everything seems right. Sorry I can't help more.

Laurence,

It's good to hear from you again. If you don't know the answer, maybe I am doomed. As to the note spellings, I wrote it months ago as an intonation exercise for arco bass, and probably shortcut the note entries, caring not for reading or appearance.

Thanks for trying.

I did what I should have done hours ago. Saved, shut down, opened it up again, and...bob's(or Robert's) your uncle, it works. Sweet mystery (misery) of life.

All of a sudden in my score, the transport tempo went down to "2". So now when I play back, it stops after a couple of beats. Does anyone know how to reset the transport tempo marking and prevent the playback from stopping?

For assistance, please attach the Sibelius .sib score file itself.

Attached is the compressed .sib file. It won't create parts properly.

Hi there

The system text object that shows as 'Jazz Funk' contained within it, very small, the text minim=1 (half-note=1). Delete that bit of the text (or change it to 100) and you should be fine.

Hope that helps

Well spotted, Jody, do you have a microscope? The parts don't create properly because all the notes are hidden. I'm trying to figure out why the barlines have no grab handles? The OP would do better to put his non-transposing bari sax in bass clef to save on leger lines.

Ah, it seems you have to delete a selected barline to get the handles back. I'm thinking that this chart must have been composed in hell.

So sorry, not following you. How do I access the system text object for JAZZ FUNK so I can make the correction? Also, will this solve the issue with the inability to create parts as well?

Edit the text to delete everything after the K, including the microscopic metronome text. To create parts, go to Parts/New. This will ask you if you want to create a default set of parts. Say Yes. To open a dynamic part, select the appropriate staff in your score and hit W. Your two alto saxes have no barlines. To rectify this, you need to pull a barline across from another instrument staff that has them. But you cannot do this because have no grab handles. To get your grab handles back, select a barline and hit Delete. Then you will probably need to go to View/Invisibles/Handles.

Thanks (I guess) for helping me resolve the playback issue. As for the parts, any direction on how to fix those issues would be greatly appreciated.

I think I've already helped in this respect. Your alto saxes have no barlines. Also, all the notation in your parts is hidden. Select all. Go to Home/Edit/Hide/ShowInAll. How did your score get in this state?

Any chance you'd be willing to take this on? A publisher needs me to give them the parts ASAP.

Are you kidding me? Take a look at your score. The very first sax voicing has the baritone playing the 3rd of the root position E7(#9) chord, spelt as an Ab and as close as a 3rd from the bass. Have you read up on low limits for intervals? Surely your publisher is not happy with that and other such bad voice leading spellings. Sorry, Dreamseeker, I can't help you.

If both you and your publisher are happy with the way it sounds, all well and good, but you need to replace barlines in your two alto sax parts and piano part. Before you can do that, you need to recreate barline handles in the full score. You also need to create parts for every instrument. You also need to unhide the content in all of your dynamic parts. I've told you how to fix these problems. I'm certainly not going to spend my valuable time doing it all for you. I certainly hope your genius will one day be discovered.

Hi again

The barline handles are not showing because all of them have a special barline in place, which looks identical. (This is an especially odd corner of Sibelius, it's true: these are called Special Normal Barlines, which is oxymoronic in way that amuses me.)

They are a remnant of the musicxml import process, I expect. There are a lot of these in the score. Luckily there is a plug-in that will delete them all, leaving the normal ones which will show the handles that you need to restore barlines to all instruments: it's called Delete Special Normal Barlines. I'm not sure if it is a shipping plug-in or if you might need to install it.

Hope that helps

Thanx again, Jody, for your powers of observation. I cannot believe that the OP spent what must have been several hours planting special (normal) barlines on top of all Sib's own default automatic ones.

You are right not to believe that, Adrian! I think they must have been an unintended result of a musicxml import. There are a lot of text styles in use that have MusicXml in their name.

The plugin Delete Special Normal Barlines needs to be installed using File>Plug-ins>Install Plug-ins.

In fairly recent times Sib changed things so that Special Normal Barlines no longer break multirests, so the original purpose for the plugin is no longer there.

In addition to convertors like musicXML, users would sometimes add Special Normal Barlines as a way of deleting other special barlines, such as Double Barlines. This accomplished that task, but such barlines have side effects, including small position shifts. There are some situations where Sibelius adds Special Normal Barlines to serves as markers, though I can't remember when this happens, or if there are bad effects from deleting such barlines.

If you just want to see if there are any Special Normal Bar lines without deleting them, you can filter then using the installable plugins Filter Other (see snap 2). You could then use the installable plugin Browse Selected Objects to navigate among the filtered objects so you can investigate them.
