stuttering on playback
Posted by infoseeker - 25 Oct 09:02AM
from time to time when I play a portion of a score back to check on the balance, the playback "stutters" - not always - but from time to time. This occurs whether I'm using Sibelius Sounds or NotePerformer. Does this indicate I need to add more memory?

Please show us a screen-shot of the Sibelius dialogue window "Audio Engine Options"

This happens to me sometimes as well. I'm including mine. Also note, InfoSeeker, how to get to the Audio Engine Options dialogue box.

I have found the Audio Engine Options, but getting a screen shot of that screen is beyond my pay grade. I can tell you what the numbers listed are if that would be any help.

One curious thing is that the stuttering is totally at random so that a passage which plays fine one time through may stutter the next time through. For that reason, I can't really send a sample for anyone to see what I'm talking about.

Whatever OS you are using (Mac or PC) there is an in-built screengrabbing tool. In windows it is called the snipping tool. I'm sure a Mac user can tell you the name of their screengrab tool. You activate it by pressing [Windows][shift]s (usually there is a standard keypress.) I'm sure you've done this before. It's not above anyone's paygrade. It's a standard function of windows/MacOS.

In general, issues like this are down to the following possibilities:

1. Not enough RAM so the OS is having to use the hard disc for working storage
2. Old/outdated sound card drivers
3. Badly set up sound choices (we need to see the playback device list and audio engine options to find this out). For best results, we need to see the list of drivers list open - as in my attached image.

I didn't even know there was such a tool. (I have a PC with Windows.) Give me a chance to do some exploring to see what I can learn - and I'll be back.

I've jus read your signature and noticed you are using a creative card. I have never had much success with these. The drivers are generally geared towards gaming, rather than music production.

I'd investigate this first. Make sure you use an ASIO or WASAPI driver and check with the creative website that you have the latest drivers. Don't rely on windows - it tells fibs!

My PC was built by a friend and I relied upon him to build me a good machine. And it has been fine so far. On another note, I have finally learned how to take a screen shot and have saved that, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to paste it onto my message. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: stuttering on playback

I spent an unacceptably unproductive amount of time yesterday learning how to grab and save a screen shot, got it saved in a .png file, and was able to copy and paste into an e-mail. But try as I might, I have been unable to paste that file into a message in this thread. So, as last best, I have typed below the info which shows up in the Audio Engine file. Two of those bits of info showed up "grayed" (indicated below) whereas the other bits of info were in black print. I have no clue what that means. I hope this info helps.

Interface: Speaker (SB X-Fi Go! Pro) (MME)
Outputs: 1/2 ASIO Setup... (gray)
Buffer size: 32768 samples
Sample rate: 44100 Hz
Latency: 557.28 ms (gray)

Of all the possibilities for "Interface", "(MME)" is the worst quality. Is there some reason why you have chosen "(MME)"?

The "Buffer size" is extraordinarily large, leading to a large latency figure.

What is the complete set of options available for the "Interface" pull-down menu?

Are the device drivers for the "SB X-Fi Go! Pro" up-to-date? The latest device drivers for that device are dated October 2019: anything earlier than that should be updated.

Robin told you how to ATTACH an image to this forum. Under the quick reply box into which i hope you are typing your responses is a button that says "Browse". This will allow you to attach a png file - as long as it is less than 1MB in size.

If you know the location of the file it should be very easy to attach it.

As to your queries. ASIO cannot be edited while using adifferent type of device (MME). You also cannot alter the latency. That is worked out depending on the devices you are using and an ASIO driver will usually give much lower latency than other devices. Lower latency means less lag in playback and when inputting via midi keyboard.

"I have been unable to paste that file into a message."

Don't even try - you can't. As is pointed out elsewhere, you have to ATTACH the file, by using the button below the message panel ("Choose file") and locating the file you need to attach.

Okay. I have clearly bitten off more than I can chew or digest. It's going to take a day - or several - to work through all the suggestions - AFTER I figure out what everyone has told me. Thanks for all the suggestions.
