Octave clefs not playing transposed
Posted by Soundsmove - 03 Aug 11:53AM
Hi all,

I'm wondering if there is a suggestions page or email for Sibelius?

I do love the programme, and have used it since version 1 - however there is a wishlist! But my main wish is a surprising omission - I'd like octave clefs to have an effect on the played sounds.

I know it's not strictly necessary inasmuch as when it's read, it'll be played properly (you'd hope), but it's off-putting to playback in the wrong octave. I know there's a workaround involving making a new instrument, but it does seem like a fairly basic ability for a scoring programme - let alone one of the best.

Many thank for any info.

This is not a surprising omission: it is a deliberate design choice.

In Sibelius, octave transpositions are defined in the Instrument definition, not in the clefs.

This deign choice is to accommodate the many instruments that play octave transposed, conventionally without using octave clefs. (e.g. guitar, and many others).

Admittedly, nobody else seems to do this, and it often confuses people, but it is the way Sibelius has always worked.

I have a few very old sib scores in which I had to use octave clefs to make guitar and double bass play back correctly. I'm sure glad that system was scrapped. Setting transposition in the instrument definition makes more sense. Everyone knows that tenor/baritone voice in regular treble clef sounds an octave lower than written, don't they? However, there seem to be a lot of users who expect the octave clefs to have an effect in pitch placement, just as the regular G, F & C clefs do. A treble clef with an 8 below would simply put middle C on the 4th space. However, additional instrument definitions would need to be created to service the use of these ancient clefs. BTW, I've just been looking through sib's gallery of available clefs. What does the double treble clef actually mean?

Another useless bit of information, I've just noticed. Middle C (sounding) always sits on a line whether using a G, F or C clef. But when any of those clefs is marked with a little 8 above or below, middle C (sounding) sits on a space. And a little 15 above or below puts it back on a line.
