Sib. 2018.x: silent note
Posted by Ben Moore - 21 Jul 06:05PM
In the attached score the F on the downbeat of the vocal line in measure 10 won't play back. It's a normal notehead and all the "play on pass" boxes are checked in the inspector. For some reason, if I delete the tie from measure 8 to 9 the F in measure 10 DOES play back. But I need that tie. Also tried deactivating the text "halting" but that had no affect. Thanks for any advice! Ben

Hi there

The best solution I've found is to

a) for the vocal stave in bar 10, swap everything to voice 2;

and

b) Select the last note of bar 8 (first note for 'land') and in the Inspector, enable Live duration and set it to 171, which is it's correct length.

Obviously this shouldn't be necessary…

Hope that's helpful

Thank you so much for the work around, Jeremy! It plays perfectly now!

Disable playback of the 16th rest in bar 8, the one with the fermata on it.

Yes, that works. Thanks! Not sure why that fermata affects the playback of a note two measures away, though. In any case I have to remember to look at my fermatas when I have playback issues. I think I had a somewhat similar fermata issue in the past.

Because a fermata causes an interruption to the tempo of a piece, it does not make sense to have mismatched fermatas on different staves of the same system.

Fermatas are mismatched, and will confuse Sibelius playback, if:
- they occur at different time points in the bar;
- they are attached to different note lengths, even at the same time point;
- they do not occur on all staves of the system.

I've often wondered about that. Suppose I have a whole note, a half note on beat 3, a quarter note on beat 4, and some rests thrown in on other staves, all with fermatas. In other words, all notes playing at the end of the measure are to be held. Is there a way to get Sibelius to play that? (I usually just give up on fermata in that case.)
