Moving a movement?
Posted by Joshua Wiczer - 19 Jul 12:03AM
Hi,

Just wondering... I've been doing some work for a composer writing multi-movement pieces. After I've engraved the work, he frequently asks me to change the order of the movements. Is there a way to do this that preserves the layout/formatting/etc. that I've already done? As-is, I've been cutting a movement and then pasting it in it's new place, but then I have to redo all the system breaks, staff spacing, etc. It might not be possible, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask!

Thanks,
Josh

Try using Lock format before copying using a SYSTEM (purple box) selection.

Thanks for your response. I tried that last night (selecting the movements, locking the format, and selecting the system (in purple) and copying/pasting), but unfortunately, the format isn't preserved.

Hi Josh,

Moving a movement (I took no 6 and moved it before no 5) and it worked exactly as specified in my instructions.

The only issues you might have are around TS changes and that you'll probably have to replace the page break between movements.

I also undid the formatting and cut/pasted again. This time there was an overlap between the end of No 6 and the start of No 7, but again, this was easily sorted out by a forced page break on the final barline of 6.

As for the other question, at some point you may have accidentally grabbed and dragged the piano short name. The result is that it has gone right off the page. The quick solution I used was to make the left page margin large enough to bring the short name onto the correct page, then click it and reset position ([ctrl/cmd][shift]p) then set the margin back to its original position.

Glad to be of help.

Thanks for taking a look at this!

I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong, because I can't get that to work. I have all the systems locked. I system-selected movement 7, cut it, and paste it right where it originally was. When it's pasted, all the layout-formatting (system breaks, page breaks, staff spacing) is gone.

I'm wondering -- is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing (that specifies when you cut/paste, it will paste the formatting as well?)

And thanks for the "Pno." help -- I did what you said, and it's all fixed.

Thinking about it, I may have missed an instruction out. Try this, Cut the system selection then, before you paste, press [esc] twice to clear the cursor. Move the pointer to where you want the music to be pasted, press [ctrl]v and then click the music into place.

I suggest you present the movements as separate Sib files until the composer makes his mind up.

Hi Josh,

by copying and pasting you will always lose spacing information (horizontally and vertically).

The best solution is to make as many copies of your Sibelius file you need, split the copies as needed (i.e. delete the respective unnecessary movements) and use then the Append Score Command in order to join the split files as desired.

By using the Append Score command you don't lose your formatting or spacing fine tuning.

The whole procedure may sound worse than it actually is.

Most useful is the plug-in Appended Score as New Piece in order to get rid of unwanted cautionary key and time signatures at the end of the movements.

Thanks for all the help.

Mike -- I tried the using the escape key to clear things out, but it didn't make a difference.

Joachim -- your suggestion makes sense to me. I will give that a try the next time I need to move movements.

Thanks, everyone! I always appreciate the help I can get here!

Josh
