We're pleased to announce the immediate availability of our February 2021 release of Sibelius. In this release, with over 500 new ManuScript commands, you can create simple scriptable plugins in Sibelius. This allows you to combine features to create whole new workflows that suit you.

Does this version have less notation options? I just don't seem to have everything I need. for example, under the barlines tab, the 'no line' option is missing.
Is it something I'm doing wrong?

It sounds as if you have downgraded from "Sibelius Ultimate" to "Sibelius".
The present-day "Sibelius" is a reduced-feature, stripped-down version of the proper product, "Sibelius Ultimate".

I didn't have sibelius ultimate to begin with but I know some features are missing from the regular sibelius. I've even been shown them by a lecturer who is as confused as I am
If you have migrated from a version such as 7.5.1 or 2018.x, installing "Sibelius" is a DOWNGRADE to what used to be called Sibelius|First.
The ONLY equivalent is "Sibelius Ultimate" which will show the word Ultimate on the splash screen.
Apparently the comparisons shown on the Avid website contain errors - i.e. it shows some features are available in lower tier versions when they are not.

We haven't removed any features from the various tiers of Sibelius, so can you email me screenshots of what you're seeing and what you're expecting to see?
My address is below.
Thanks!

I can't deal with this new system and my patience is at its limit. I have Ultimate at both home and work and am billed monthly. Yesterday I started a score at work. So far, it is short and uncomplicated. Now I'm trying to open the file at home, and I get the message,
"There was an error opening [file]: This score was created with a newer version of Sibelius. You need to update Sibelius to open it (a free update may be available from www.sibelius.com)." The About splash screen says I have Version 2020.1, build 2221.
So then I load in a different score in order to be able to access File - Help - Check for Updates, and it takes me to Avid Link, which tells me that I have Sibelius "activated" but provides no hint about an update. www.sibelius.com bombards me with advertisements and other exasperating pop-ups; eventually I can get to a screen where I can buy the program again, but there's nothing about an update for an existing subscription.
Am I supposed to track down and install the program from scratch every time there's an update? I wasn't prompted to re-install from my work computer, although my subscription had been de-activated and so I had to go through the usual hassle of entering all of my 40-digit code numbers for the umpteenth time. What is the point of Avid Link, if not to keep track of this from one central module?
There are three possibilities:
1. Avid has for some reason decided to devise an opaque system of mandatory updates and short-lived "subscription" activations that is guaranteed to antagonize and alienate long-time Sibelius users;
2. There's something weird with my home computer that I need help with; or
3. There's something really obvious and simple that I'm not understanding.
I suggest you keep your eye on this forum. New releases are announced, and if Avid Link lets you down you can always download them directly from your Avid Account.
Avid Link will tell you about updates, and enable you to download them, ONLY if you are signed in to Avid Link. So one possible reason for your difficulties is that you have not signed in to Avid Link for the past year.
If, for any reason, Avid Link fails to download an update, you can always download the latest version of Sibelius from your account at http://my.avid.com/products

Thanks, Laurence and Robin. Yesterday, Avid Link was not showing an Update link for Sibelius, but today it was. The first time (today) that I installed the update, Sibelius said it was updated and I could open the file in question, but Link still said that I was on the old version and that the update had failed due to a "communication error." I tried refreshing Link but the messages were the same. So I installed the update a second time, and now Link is happy, I guess.
I don't know why Link didn't make the update available in the first place, but thank you both for encouraging me to lean on it until it woke up.
when is the next update its been a good few months now.

There's a new guy, Justin, so I think it will be worth our patience to give him a shot at fixing things, even if it takes some time now. Without him, I would blow this popsicle stand at this point.

I really don't think one guy with an engraving background (excellent though I know Justin is at his job) is going to make that much difference to what goes on in the behemoth that is Avid/Sibelius.

It should be obvious to anyone with common sense that he has had NO effect on what is the next release he seems so excited about.
And anyone who claims "Sibelius is the best notation software in the world" is either being paid to tell lies, or doesn't have a clue about what the competition has been doing for the last 8 years, IMO.
The current version of Sib is still full of clumsy work-rounds that were in Sib 4 (or even earlier versions). The competition isn't.

Oh Rob, you old grouch, do leave Justin alone! No, he probably didn't affect the current version much (though I imagine he was a beta-tester). But he knows what's in the next update, and he's allowed to be enthusiastic about it.
As for me, I'm looking forward to the next update.
