Moving from subscription to perpetual license
Posted by btrmpt - 23 Jan 09:12PM
Hi

Due to some difficulties with satisfying the criteria for obtaining and education discount I decided to move from my Sibelius Ultimate subscription to purchase a perpetual Sibelius license (not ultimate, just the regular one).

My Ultimate subscription ends in March but I thought I'd junk Sibelius Ultimate off my Mac (carry on paying the last instalment next month of course) and install the version of Sibelius I'd just purchased from Thomann this evening.

All seemed well but when I fired Sibelius up it still showed Sibelius Ultimate.

Now I should say I registered a my work email address (an education authority address) for My Avid to install the newly purchased Sibelius (Ultimate was previously registered in with my personal email) so Sibelius Ultimate shouldn't be associated with this copy. Is there something hidden on my MacBook telling my Sibelius that I have an Ultimate subscription so it defaults to that?

Will it revert to my perpetual license when the Ultimate subscription year runs out in March?

thanks for any insights.

You do realise that 'regular' Sibelius is a very cut-down version? If you're OK with what it offers, you might as well save your money completely and use MuseScore.

You now have two licences on your computer: the first for Sibelius Ultimate subscription, and the second for Sibelius Perpetual.

They both exist on your computer and are not removed or nullified by uninstalling Sibelius.

In order to stop using one, and start using the other, you need to open Avid Link, on the "Profile" tab, sign in with your Avid credentials, move to tab "Products", then open the "Licenses" panel for "Sibelius".

In the Licenses panel, you need first to de-activate the license for Sibelius Ultimate, and then click the "USE LICENSE" button for plain "Sibelius".

Hi

I think it can cope with 16 staves and as I'm a full time brass teacher for a local authority in the UK I won't need anymore than that. I use it to write for ensembles of various sizes and if I need to do a big all singing all dancing arrangement for full wind band and strings I'll use StaffPad. I hope there aren't too many limitations other than the limited number of staves. I've saved all my scores as .musicxml and have moved them onto my iPad Pro 12.9 in StaffPad and for what I need that is coping fine.

Currently I am quicker with Sibelius though so want to keep something familiar that I can use if I'm in a hurry but I certainly didn't want to pay the full price for a work tool like Sibelius that I use less frequently these days as I've built up a huge library of scores as I've used Sibelius since it first moved to the PC and Mac.

How's that working out at the moment?

Hi

We're doing pretty well. I'm teaching face to face in some schools, by Microsoft Teams in others. The kids seem really resilient. I'm lucky I work for a Scottish Island authority that has thankfully seen very little covid.

Nice one!

Fortunately I'm at an age where reasonably comfortable retirement is an option, though I wasn't planning on it being forced on me quite so suddenly! And I can still pick up pin money from my computer skills.

But my current advice to anyone hoping to start a career like I had can only be 'find something else'. Bummer.

I’m 9 years away from retiring but as I’ve been teaching since September 1984 I’m probably in a similar position to you re retirement if push came to shove. Thankfully my authority doesn’t charge for lessons so we are far more fortunate than most.
