Sfz+ and Jeux 1.4
Posted by Geoff Davey - 19 Jan 10:41PM
The sfz+/Jeux 1.4 combination worked perfectly well in my old Sib 7.5/Windows 7 installation but I cannot get it to work in Sib 2019.1/Windows 10, where it does not appear on the Installed Devices list.

I have not been able to find out if sfx+ and Jeux 1.4 are 32 bit, but I am assuming this is the problem.

I would appreciate any advice on getting this combination to work, or perhaps suggesting other software.

While NotePerformer has very good organ sounds, Jeux offers a greater range of stops and is much easier and more flexible when it comes to setting up registrations.

Thank you.

sfz+ was indeed 32-bit, and will not work with any version of Sibelius later than 7.5.1.

You might be able to play soundfonts using the product "sforzando":
https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html
which is 64-bit and works with Sibelius. It is able to translate certain other soundfont formats into the sfz format that it plays.

Thank you for your prompt reply, Robin.

It is good to know Sforzando is 64 bit and I shall give it a try. I hope Jeux14.SF2 is one of the soundfont formats it can handle.

Cheers.

I now have sforzando appearing in Available Devices, but I have been unable to convert the Jeux14SF2 to the required SFZ format.

sforzando reports "Cannot import Jeux14.SF2. Converter was unsuccessful".

I tried converting the file with sfZed and Polyphone but both rejected it.

Your further interest is very much appreciated, Robin.

I have managed to get Sibelius to recognise your suggested applications - along with some others I have found - but I cannot get them to open the Jeux soundfont.

Since my only use for Jeux is to export audio files I shall simply use the Sfx+ setup on my old 32-bit laptop when required.

Thank you again for your help.

I am able to get Jeux14.SF2 to convert into Sforzando by drag-and-drop, and playback in Sibelius.

Maybe there is something wrong with your Jeux14.SF2 file.
My copy is 3,761,162 bytes in size.

Well thanks to your tenacity I have Jeux working now, Robin!

The Jeux14.SF2 I am using is the same size as yours. What I hadn't tried doing, however, was simply dragging it into Sforzando to load it. I was surprised, however, that the converted SF2 file is a .wav file. Did that happen for you too?

Would you mind telling me exactly where you installed all the components? Because I have been experimenting so much, I have ended up with a convoluted process and path:

- installed Sforzando into Program Files > Plogue
- opened Sforzando and dragged Jeux14.SF2 into it
- dragged the resulting sf2_smpl.wav file and the sforzando .dll file into Avid > VST Plugins
- set up a Sforzando/Jeux configuration in Sibelius (with two instances of sforzando as I needed to do with sfz+)

I'm sure it need not be so complicated, but now that it is working I'm afraid to change anything!

Your continuing expert advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.
