Creating a new drum map
Posted by Martino Traversa - 17 Oct 02:11PM
I tried to create a new percussion instrument staff, but when I try to select a sound for each individual line, what I hear are different sounds. The system cannot select the chosen sounds correctly. A real disaster!

Any one unpitched percussion staff can play sounds from only one sample library program (or patch). Therefore all the sounds specified by a drum map must all come from the same sample library patch.

If you specify a drum map with sounds from more than one program/patch, then it will not work correctly, and Sibelius will play random sounds instead.

Sometimes the best approach can be to notate whatever you want the player to see on a non-playing stave, then add multiple hidden staves for playback (if playback is important).

Hi Robin,
what i tried to do is the following thing.
From Home> All Instruments> Orchestra Unpitched Percussion, then I selected "Percussion [5 line]" and finally "New instrument". After renaming the name of the new instrument, I click on "Edit Staff Type". In the new window that opens I select the position in which I want to hear a particular sound, but when I go to choose the sound, it doesn't load it correctly. Accordingly with your message, what kind of sounds and where should I go to select them? For example I wish to have a Bass drum on line 1, a Gong on line 2 and a Temple block on line 3: is it possible get this setup?

As I said before, any one unpitched percussion staff can play sounds from only one patch in the sample library. You cannot have sounds from more than one patch in a drum map.

The patches available depend on the sample library, which you have not told us.

The sample library I am using is "Sibelius 7 Sounds". I understand that it's not possible to choose sounds from different program within the same staff, but there is still something that it doesn't work.
Example 1. I have created a "Gong [3 line]" instrument starting from the "Gong [1 line]" instrument. When I add 2 more lines, and I select the three different sounds (23, 28 and 60 inches), which are part of the same program, all the selected sounds plays the same.
Example 2. I have tried to add to the score the sound "Gamelan Kempyang and Ketuk [2 lines]", which is a standard instrument, and when I start the playback the sounds that I can hear is always the Gong! It would be possible that there is a problem with the cache?

I am unable to find any instruments or sounds within Sibelius that match your description "three different sounds (23, 28 and 60 inches)". Please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates this issue.

The Sibelius Sounds sample library does not contain any of the sounds defined for that instrument in Sibelius. Therefore, Sibelius plays back a "next nearest" sound that is available.

You need to be aware that instruments defined in Sibelius might not have any relevant sounds available for playback from the currently active sample library. And, conversely, there might be sounds in the current sample library that are not associated with any defined instrument in Sibelius.

The path to find these sound is:
Unpitched Percussion/Metal/Cymbal/Gong
Please you will find the .sib score.

The path to find these Gamelan sounds is below:
All instruments/Other Unpitched Percussion/Gamelan Gong, Gamelan Kempyang and Ketuk.

Perhaps this is the problem... I take it for granted that if there is an instrument in Sibelius, by going to select it, you can hear the sound of that specific instrument being played back. But obviously this is not the case. There is too much discrepancy between all the instruments listed in Sibelius and the actual sounds that can be heard. Is there a sound library that can be used particularly effectively?

You appear to be quoting SoundIDs rather than patch names.

There are no such sounds in the Sibelius Sounds sample library.

Absolutely not. You can only play back sounds that are provided in the current sample library, which will always be a very small sub-set of the sounds that the SoundID system is capable of describing within Sibelius.

Presumably you would be looking for a sample library that can provide gamelan sounds. Sorry, I do not know of one. Maybe other readers will know.
