Creating a separate (dynamic) part
Posted by Adriano Baumann - 15 Oct 07:51AM (edited 15 Oct 08:43AM)
Hi everybody :-)
In a very complicated (but still Romantic) score, whose dynamic part extracting causes me a lot of difficulties since months (we discussed on other details earier on), I need to "separate" the percussion part from the score, since everything started becoming very messy during the (dynamic) extracting process. So at first I deleted all other instruments from the full score after having inserted necessary cue references (strings and voice). After this I saved this new percussion score with a new name. See the enclosed results(s). The French term for percussion is "batterie".
What I get now is really confusing. Instead of a sigle new "batterie" part I get (under the first whih should be the right one) some 4 more parts in the list, which are totally unnecessary. Why this?
Trying to delete these "extras" from the "home, add or remove" window, the "main" part gets affected. Is there no way I can obtain a secure, single-line part and nothing else in the "+" part's list? The first "batterie" on my list is the onbe which works and should be figuring alone.
Of course, in the worst case I could create a new empty score first, but then I would get a similar situation because of the additional "cue" voices involved, which means that I cannot then simply "copy-paste" the old version into the new empty staves...
Another questionable aspect in the dynamic parts extraction is that, when you ahve a single part playing only for a couple of bars at the beginning and the remaining shows up as an endless series of empty bars, one cannot edit this series of unusuable material into a single bar with a fermata and the text "tacet" as it is usually done - since it would "dynamically" affect the othe instruments of the score. Or am I wrong? See, for example, the triangle on page 9 of the enclosed "part".
Thanks for your advice!

Hi there

I think that the problems you're having are because there are two parts with the same name (Batterie) and that confuses Sibelius. It mixes the two up and edits in the File Info area can affect the wrong one. It may also confuse the Delete Parts function.

Try this:

1. Open the part you want to keep, and go to File > Info.
2. Temporarily change the part name in some memorable way (Batterie-1)
3. Go back to the score, and then check that the new part name is indeed associated with the part you want to keep. (It might not be.)
4. Once you're sure of the name of the part that you want to keep, go to Parts > Delete parts and select all four of the other parts, and delete them.
5. (If necessary) change the part name of the one remaining part back to 'Batterie'.

Hope that helps

That works perfectly, thanks a lot Jeremy :-)
What I did not notice is that once I had changed the name of the part, one has also to consider (on the same "info" side) that the title in the box "Show info for" has also to be changed.
What about the sencon question included in my today's message? No hurry, of course...

Hi again

Sibelius doesn't allow a TACET to appear for part of a movement. I think this is a good policy.

If you want to hack it, you can get some way towards what you want in the following way:

1. In the part, hide *almost everything* after the last note played and the final barline of the movement. By 'almost everything' I mean: rehearsal marks, rests, tempo markings, time signatures and barlines. Leave alone (unhidden) one empty bar after the last bar with a note in it.

2. Select everything in the movement and force it into one system. Everything after the bar with the last note in it should appear as a single long multirest.

3 Create a text object (the one in your score which contains 'Batterie TACET' will do) and
a) set it to Erase Background (in the Inspector);
b) drag its frame to make it a bit taller;
c) Set it to draw on top of everything by changing Appearance > Order from default to 32;

4. Move it on top of the multirest number, so it is obscured.

Picture attached.

I don't know much about your piece, but in general I would prefer to leave all the rests showing and put cues in so the player can follow along.

Hope that helps a bit, though
Jeremy
