Sib. 8.x: Creating a chord symbol with a flatted note w/ Inkpen font not working
Posted by dshort - 20 Feb 04:54AM
This is probably buried in a thread somewhere, and I can't believe this is so hard to figure out.

Just trying to create a Bb7 chord symbol. But with the Inkpen font, I can't change it from BB7 (the 2nd B is 'lower case'.)

this wasn't a problem with Sibelius 4.

TIA

Please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates the issue.

Are you using the new-style (with effect from Sibelius 6) Chord Symbol Objects, or legacy (Sibelius 5 and earlier) Chord Symbol Text?

For chords, you may use only those "chord" fonts that are supplied with Sibelius. You may not, for instance, use "Inkpen2 Std" or "Inkpen2 Text Std". If you want the Inkpen2 style for chords, you must use "Inkpen2 Chords Std".

Just a guess. Is your Caps lock on or off?

OK, I've made some progress.

I can get a basic 7th chord, e.g. Bb7, to work.

The problem still have is with more complex chords, e.g. Ab-(+7).

After going into 'Edit Chord Symbols', I find 'minor major 7'. I can do Ab-(M7), or Ab-(^7) (triangle 7), but there's no apparent option to make the 'major 7' a +7. Something like a Gb7+9 works fine. (examples attached.)

As far as I can tell, I'm using the Chord Symbol Objects supplied with Sibelius 8.

thanks!

"+7" isn't globally recognised as major 7th. "+" is normally used only to mean augmented or raised. A major 7th is neither an augmented nor raised interval. However, you can write your symbols any way you wish with Legacy (Preferences/Other/ChordSymbols). I don't use automated chord symbols and I don't understand why you are getting a small caps B when you type "b" for flat. Seems you have some editing to do. I don't even know if this is possible in 'Edit Chord Symbol'.

What exact version number of Sibelius are you using?

In Sibelius 4 you ONLY had 'Legacy' Chord Symbols - though they weren't called 'Legacy' then of course! They were pretty basic, but they did all that many of us needed chord symbols to do. And, broadly speaking, what you typed was what you got. Even +7 for a major 7th.

I suggest you do this. In your Sibelius program go to File/Preferences/Other and tick the box for 'Use legacy chord symbol input'. I suspect Chord Symbols will start working the way that you prefer again.

Which is what I suggested in my last reply. Thanx, Adrian. That's OK, don't mention it. ;-)
