Exported Video Frame Rate
Posted by MSwanson - 19 Feb 01:07AM (edited 19 Feb 01:19AM)
I'm using Sibelius 2020.1 on Mac/Catalina to notate some practice drum rudiments. I've noticed that when I export video, the low frame rate causes the playback line to move in and out-of-sync with the audio. When you're trying to watch the playback line to accurately time the first beat of a measure, it's very disconcerting to see it show up after the beat. It seems to be okay if the tempo is evenly divisible by 10 (I think).

I've seen other comments asking about the ability to change the frame rate, and I'm wondering if there's a new/more recent preference buried somewhere that I haven't found. Or, is there another way to increase the frame rate?

Thanks!

Sadly, after lots of searching, it appears that there is no way to configure the frame rate of the exported video. This would be a fantastic feature to add in a future update.

I think the frame rate is simply whatever the tempo is in the score.

I did a little testing, and it appears that the frame rate is based on a simple set of calculations:

duration_in_seconds = ((beats_in_song / bpm) * 60)
frames_per_second = beats_in_song / duration_in_seconds

This means that my 20-beat song at 105bpm exports a video with a frame rate of 1.75fps.

The same song at 107bpm = 1.78fps.
The same song at 150bpm = 2.5fps.

Theoretically, this should allow the playback line to exactly follow each beat. However, it's easy to see that this isn't always the case. I suspect that it might have something to do with bringing the video into tools like Adobe Premiere for titles/edits/etc.

It would be nice to be able to specify the output frame rate, realizing the the exported video could be very large (which is exactly what I'd love for editing).

Played around a little more, and it does appear that bringing the exported video from Sibelius into Adobe Premiere (sometimes) introduces a timing issue where the playback line doesn't sync correctly. It could be due to the lower frame rate or perhaps the timebase of the exported media. The good news is that the exported video appears to be correct...it's just that editing it might introduce issues.
