Used for Ossia clarification
Posted by Michele Galvagno - 11 Sep 11:08AM
In the Sibelius Reference, in the Instruments chapter, when the Edit Staff Type section is discussed, nothing is said about the "Used as Ossia staff" part.

I would like to know if there is some knowledge about exactly what that does because, when I create instruments that are a copies of the "no instrument (hidden)" one and perform changes on them to achieve what I need I seem to get not coherent results according to the combination of options selected plus/minus that Ossia one.

Thank you for sharing your insight!

Hi Michele

The property 'Used for Ossias' has only one effect, as far as I know: if ticked, it hides time signatures.

Outside of the 'No instrument (hidden)' instrument, which is used for ossias, this is occasionally useful if you want to hide the time signatures on a single staff in some sort of polymetric situation. The only other way to do that is to hide the time signature completely and then add the fake time signature everywhere else, using a text style.

I think it's better to use Instrument Changes: if you define a new instrument based on the original and tick 'Used for Ossias' then you can switch the showing of time signatures on and off whenever needed.

Hope that's useful

Thank you Jeremy!
Yes, this was very useful.
Hopefully they will add this to the documentation.

I have found that these “no instruments” staves are quite buggy in regards to bracketing. I’m writing for a big orchestra where percussions sometimes have an extra staff but this causes a brace to appear at the beginning of the system.
Sadly, when I go into the instruments definition and check what it is bracketing with there is indeed “nothing”.

Thank you once more for your help
