Noteperformer with Sibelius Ultimate sounds / alternates
Posted by Leea25 - 12 Jul 09:40PM
Hi there,

First post here!

Apologies if this is already covered somewhere, but I didn't find it in a quick search.

I have the Sibelius Sounds that come with Sibelius Ultimate and the wind and percussion (I love the bass drum!) are excellent, the brass ok and the strings, timps and horns pretty awful. However, I have been listening to examples of NotePerformer 1 and 2 online and the strings are fantastic! The brass and horns are better too.

So, my question is, is it possible to mix sound sets? Is there a way I could use Sibelius Sounds' wind, harp and percussion, with timps, brass and strings from NotePerformer?

If not, does anyone have any suggestions as to a good sound set I could buy - I'm happy to spend a bit of money, but I do a lot of arranging for string orchestra as well as orchestration for full orchestra, and the strings in Sibelius Sounds are just not very good - quick, legato notes don't speak at all unless you mark every one of them staccato, which is often not the sound desired!

Any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks,
Lee

It is often possible to mix sound sets, but in the case of NotePerformer, you're likely to run into playback issues. The way NotePerformer is able to get such a musical performance out of the score is that it "reads ahead" with about a 1-second delay upon playback. If you pair this with another instrument library that doesn't do this (most don't), there will be syncing issues. Not sure if anyone has figured a work-around, so I'd be curious to know if anyone has gotten it to work with other libraries.

It IS possible without a single problem to mix FOR PLAYBACK Noteperformer with other VSTi (I use it with GPO, with Pianoteq, with Kontakt)

What is NOT possible is to play REAL TIME with Noteperformer.

Just create a new playback configuration with both noteperformer and sibelius sounds in the RH pane. They will 'play nicely' together. As Francesco says, you will find it hard to sync realtime playing with NP.

Hi all,

Thanks a lot for your quick replies. I have been playing around with NotePerformer and the sound for large-scale, fast pieces is fantastic. However, I'm having trouble with slow pieces. The software seems to assume that any non-slurred notes should not be played legato, which is great in fast tempi, but terrible in slow tempi! I have read through the user guide but can't see how to change this. Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Lee

In Sibelius go to Play > Performance and look at the Note Durations section. Make sure that Unslurred notes are set to 100% of written duration.

There is a NotePerformer plugin you can invoke to stop non-slurred notes being rendered non-legato.

"The 'Tenuto Always' Plug-In forces all notes to be performed for their full written length, overriding natural interpretation."
