Exporting PDFs - Font Issue When Printing?

Hi,

I'm using Sibelius 8.5 and having an issue with the Export to PDF feature.

When I use the Export Folder to PDF plug-in, the PDFs generated look just fine and print fine for me. But for other people, the PDFs look fine on the screen but don't print correctly -- there appear to be issues with the fonts.

I've done a little bit of research here, and it seems that the fonts are embedded in the PDFs that Sibelius creates, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I'm attaching a screenshot of what some it should look like. In a follow-up message, I'll attach what someone else printed out an scanned in (because it seems like I can only upload one attachment per post.) Note the header and the Coda marking.

Any suggestions? Is there more information you need from me? (This is my first time posting here, so I'm not entirely sure what information would be helpful from me!)

Can you check if all the fonts are embedded in the pdf. If you could attach a pdf file or your sibelius file it could help a lot to sort out this problem...

Have you chosen a non-standard font for the Repeat and Title text styles? A quick solution might be - don't.

You can attach multiple files by posting your message with one attachment then returning to Edit it and attaching another one.

Is this problem repeatable, with other end-users, or is it just that one person who cannot print your PDFs correctly?

I'm attaching the Sibelius file here. (The forum wouldn't let me upload a PDF -- is there any way around that?)

I've been told that several people (using different printers) encountered this problem, trying to print from these PDFs.

Unfortunately, this is for work that I'm doing for a publishing company which has requested that I use specific (non-standard) fonts.

When I load the PDF file in Acrobat and check the fonts, it appears that everything necessary is embedded (BakerSignetBT-Roman, DolceVita, Garamond, Opus, Palatino)

You could convert the fonts to paths. If you have the full acrobat it should be possible with it. You can also use ghostscript for that or Scribus.
If you are on Mac then I heard good things about resaving a Pdf in Preview.

We really need information from someone who is unable to print your PDFs correctly, as follows:
1. Does the PDF score open and look correct in the screen, or do the tofu marks appear on the screen?
2. If the tofu marks appear only on printing, but look correct on the screen, then the problem must be with that user's computer: the first thing to try is to restart the operating system, then try the print again.

Are the users having difficulty with the PDFs using Windows or using Mac OS?

I should have mentioned earlier that I'm using Windows 10 (and don't have the full Acrobat). I do need to be able to use the Export Folder to PDF option because, working for this publishing company, it's often 50+ files that needs to be converted to PDFs, often.

From the people who have had issues printing: I know that one is using a Mac, I don't know about the other one (but I can look into that). The score opens just fine and the marks only appear when printing. I will contact them and have them try restarting and printing again.

Please tell us how it went!
The print screenshot really looks strange as it stopped working right in the middle of a textline. Perhaps the printer font cache had problems.!?

I'm sure you will have solved it but if nothing else helps then you can try ghostscript to convert fonts to paths.
This textline saved as a .bat file will process all dragged PDFs:
for %%a in (%*) do "C:\Program Files\gs\gs9.20\bin\gswin32c.exe" -o %%a_paths.pdf -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress -dNoOutputFonts %%a

An OS independent PDFfonts2paths converter is also part of LOSA (in my signature)

Thanks, all. I've been in touch with one of the people who was having issues printing the PDFs (the other person was someone that he forwarded the PDF to); he tried it again, and it worked. I'm not exactly sure what he did differently, but I've forwarded all of your suggestions along to him.
