Sib. 7.5: audio engine error: bad settings
Posted by JJ1234 - 25 Oct 11:42PM
Hi, I am having problem with Sibelius - no sounds are heard.

I am having the message upon the start of the program:

audio engine error: bad settings

And yes I have deleted the plogue engune file, and the sibelius.rewire file, and did the rewire cleanups. That did not help. The only way, I can make the program work is to pus it into the rewire slave with Logic or Cubase. Then the Sibelius sounds load up. Any ideas?

One of the causes of this message is an incompatible combination of configurations within Sibelius.

The:
(a) inclusion of the player device "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" in the active "Playback Configuration"; and
(b) the selection of any "Interface" involving "ASIO" in "Audio Engine Options"
are incompatible with each other.

Change one or the other, or both.

For instance:
- use "Sibelius 7 Sounds" instead of "General MIDI (Basic)" in Playback Configurations; and/or
- use a "DS" interface, rather than "ASIO", for the desired physical output device.

Well I am using OSX 10.11.6. SO I do not have Microsoft wavetable synth.

Neither internal coreaudio device nor RME 400 fireface do not change anything. I get the message:
Audio engine error: bad settings

Did the PRAM reset, but it did not help either. Any more ideas?

What changed on this Mac between the last time that Sibelius played back correctly, and the first time that it went wrong?

From what I recall, the last thing I did and heard the sound from Sibelius standalone was this: I was exporting audio of an orchestral score, and then the program crashed. After that the export button is gray.

Please attach screen-shots of:
- Sibelius dialogue "Playback Devices";
- Sibelius dialogue "Audio Engine Options".

- Then ensure that Sibelius is fully quit (restart Mac OS if unsure);
- for the following, do not use Search or Spotlight: follow the precise paths given;
- In the Finder, open the following folder from within the User Library:
~/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7.5/PlogueEngine
- From that folder, open the file "PlogueEngine_x64.log" in a plain-text editor, then copy and paste all the contents into your next post.

- After having done that, trash the entire folder "PlogueEngine" (with all its contents), and empty the Trash;
- then try launching Sibelius and testing playback.

The error situation is here in the log:

> E:140735223209984:19689175057:Built-in Output
> E:140735223209984:19689175058:Pa_IsFormatSupported: Error number: -9999 message: Unanticipated host error

Do you have any other audio-producing application open on the Mac, even if in the background?

The error message is similar to that in this thread:
http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=705823&groupid=3
but that thread has stopped responding to suggestions.

Please pull down the Apple menu and select "Restart", then when the Mac OS has restarted, try Sibelius again before launching anything else.

Please also provide this evidence:

- in the Finder, pull down the Go menu and select "Utilities";
- in Utilities, open "Audio MIDI Setup.app";
- attach a screen-shot of the "Audio Devices" window with "Built-in Output" selected.

Please ensure that there are no "aggregated" audio configurations on this Mac.

Please try this experiment:

- fully quit Sibelius;
- in "Audio MIDI Setup", use the pull-down options to change "2ch 32-bit float" to "2ch 24-bit Integer";
- close and quit "Audio MIDI Setup";
- try launching Sibelius.

Tested it, did not help.
Unfortunately it did not solve the issue.

Is there any other audio-producing application running in the background?

Have you tried "Restart" as suggested above?

I'm glad to hear that you are up and running again, but sorry to hear that the solution was so extreme.
