Sib. 7.1.3: MIDI CC DATA
Posted by Ed Buller - 15 Aug 01:27PM
Hi

Does anyone know how to alter the midi data of a stave prior to export as a midi file ?.

I wish to compose in Sibelius and export into Cubase to render. At the moment Sibelius sets a lot off CC data. It would be very useful to be able to tweak this

any suggestions ?

Probably easier to tweak it in Cubase, where you have graphic display of all MIDI Control data.

By using the advanced filter you can select, then copy or cut the Control messages youre interested in, and paste them somewhere outside of Sib and tweak them..

Then copy the tweaked Control numbers, and create Other Staff text, Plain Text, and paste them in where you want them in your Sib score.

Seems to work here-pls let me know if it works for you.

Thanks Bob

In addition:

Sibelius adds CC11 to every single note. I encountered that deleting all CC11 destroys the blending you have adjusted within Sibelius.

I remove them in Cubase in the Midi-editor and leave some initial CC11 left in the part.

After importing into Cubase I have to work in the editor anyway so I have CC1, CC7 and CC11 always shown at the bottom.

HI

Thank you very much for the speedy replies. I guess what i'm after isn't possible. I'm very familiar with cubase so it would be an easy task to create a macro to delete necessary CC data but i wanted to actually write as much as I can in Sibelius ( partly due to the phenomenal sound of NOTEPERFORMER )and just use cub as as the final stage. I was Dreaming that i could actually tweak my template so it played back ALL of the midi data in Sibelius as a starting point and then only need a bit of fine tuning . But i'm staring to think that is impossible

Again pls try what I suggested..You start off with all the midi data in Sib, and you only left Sib to tweak the data on paper, after you copied it, and paste it back into Sib.

It was really fast, and might be the only way to do what you want...

Thanks Bob

Hi Bob

so if I understand you correctly you say export the shown midi dat to a normal text editor. Fix it then paste it in as staff text ?

Hi Ed--

In Sib use the Advanced filter to filter the Midi CC messages,
then copy, or cut them..this places them on the Clipboard.

Then paste them into anything outside of Sib..an email, a text page, etc and tweak them.

Then copy the tweaked ones and create Other Staff text, Plain Text, at the point where you want to paste them in your Sib score, and paste the tweaked ones back in.

It sounds a LOT longer that it actually takes:)

Thanks Bob

When you go back to your Sib score the Midi messages should be highlighted in blue..

Are you actually seeing MIDI cc messages in Sibelius? In a score created in Sibelius? I wonder where they are coming from?

We "tweak" Sibelius playback with notation, articulations, dynamics, Mixer settings etc. An Exported MIDI file will attempt to translate some of these as MIDI CC messages.

Whether there's any point in optimizing a Sibelius score for playback through NotePerformer, then Exporting to Cubase - which can't use NotePerformer sounds - is another question. Is the "expression" added by NP included in a MIDI Export? Interesting. I must experiment...

if i create a blank score.....no notes just full orchestra, and export it it contains CC data. Volume , Pan and some effects data. I was hoping I could use this to my advantage and tweak it.

That CC data youre talking about isnt in the SIb file as far as I can tell..but is written when the midi file is written.

If anyone knows differently, please let us know.

PS And those few Midi messages at the start..THEY'RE what youve been talking about trying to tweak??

Couldnt you just enter them with your own values at the start of the score?

Thanks Bob

What CC's do you see when you open a blank score in Cubase?

64, 7?

Please list them all-thanks Bob

That MIDI data is attempting to tell Cubase (or whatever) what instruments are assigned to each stave and how their volume, pan position etc. are set up in the Sibelius Mixer.

If you want different data, make different settings!

ok automatic midi data :
CC 73, 64,91,10,7

this appears on any export . The first ( 73 ) relates to program data for the instrument. ( flute )...Oboe is 68 ...TUBA is 58.

this is a default. There automatically on any midi export unless you disable it on the preferences page. What i'd like to know is how to set it up ...in Sibelius. This DATA does NOT appear as text with~.in the score...as far as I can see

thanks

Look at the Midi CC numbers, that you want to tweak..

at the Beginning of the Score, create New Midi messages with those controllers and the values you want to use.

Pls see 598-599 Sib 7.1.3 pdf ref man--Creating Midi Messages in Sibelius, etc

Thanks Bob

Hi

yes this will work. But it will just ADD a new command after the preset one. Which is annoying . I'd like to change the presto one. But it's obviously not possible

Once again , thanks for all the help

But there's really no point. If you want a different Pan or Volume setting for an Instrument, set it in the Mixer.

Yes it is (see attached screen shot). Look at the two Main Volume settings too.

And it works. Though Cubase's Mixer doesn't display the setting.
