I am a new user to Sibelius First, and having some difficulty understanding why it is difficult to add additional notes to chord already entered, without it erasing the other notes. It would be nice to simply highlight a note previously entered, and perhaps hold an option key to indicate that you want to add a note rather than replace what is there.
The only work-arounds I have found are to add another voice, or use the "add interval above or below" option. Seems rather clumsy.
Wouldn't it be quite a normal workflow to first enter the melody line, then go back and flesh out the chords?
I'd appreciate any advice (maybe there is something obvious I am missing, but I have searched the manual, tutorials and the knowledge base).

Sibilius First v7.1.3 on a MacBook Pro running OX 10.8.2.
I have no experience with Sib.First, but in the full version you can add an interval above any note using the top row of numbers, or add Shift for interval below.
It does not seem possible to add additional notes using the screen keypad and mouse. When you go to add another note to an existing chord, it replaces the other notes in the chord.
AS Adrian said select the note you want to add to , then press any of the top row of numbers on the Main Computer Keyboard (Not the number pad)to add that interval above the selected note. If you want the interval below use shift + the number.

Sibelius 7.1.3 ,Photoscore Ult. 7.0.2; Windows 7 64 bit; quad core i7, 16GB ram; core I5, 8 GB ram also with Sibelius 6.2 and Photoscore 6.1.
With one note selected, you can Alt-Klik an additional note to the chord, or use the top row of numbers (above the qwerty line) to add an interval. See my previous post. Does this not work in Sib.First?
Alt click does add a note to a selected note in Sib 7 First. Be sure the note you click on is selected, though.
When you think about it, alt-click is pasting the selected item, so it is a little curious that it actually works, since ctrl-C/ctrl-v will wipe out the selected note.
All in all, I tend to add notes to existing notes using the numbers above the QWERTY keys, since that always works, and that is more than I can say for most of the clicking options.

Sib 1.2 - 7, Windows 7 Pro SP 1 64 bit, 4 G RAM. Year 2013.
The solutions mentioned above are fine for people who understand intervals, but to music novices, it's much easier and quicker to be able to just click on the staff to add a note. But doing so, deletes the chord. I'm not sure why that would ever be something someone would want it to do. It's easier for me to just click with my mouse where I want it to go, than to use keyboard combinations and hope it's the right combination.
I also started with Sib. First (back in 2012) and I do remember experiencing a similar issue). However, I upgraded to Sib. 7 (in 2014 I think?) and never excountered the same problem again.
I am not going to be producing any more scores until I have gone over some of the basics, as well as clearing up any loose-ends.
Yesterday I came across an excellent video which will suit you and answers/demonstrates your question. In fact I am going to work through the entire series whilst this virus chaos continues to erupt around us all...
