Sib. 7.1: Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings
Posted by Alan Belkin - 23 Aug 02:08PM
For the past two days this appears when I launch Sib. I can"t imagine why, since I have changed nothing, here in any other sound application.

I have tried changing the audio engine options but still have no sound at all with any of the applicable ones. No devices seem to be active, there is nothing to "test" in the playback devices window, both MS GS wavetable synth and Delta AP midi are greyed out.

???

Re: Sib. 7.1: Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings
Posted by Alan Belkin - 23 Aug 02:48PM
This did NOT work. See below:

"Sibelius may still think that it’s connected to another audio application via ReWire: You should find you can click OK on the error message and still get into Sibelius, but you’ll find you don’t get any sound during playback. To fix this, open Playback Devices (click the dialog launcher button in the Play > Setup group in Sibelius 7, or in the Play menu in Sibelius 6 and Sibelius 5) and click the Audio Engine Options button. There, see if the Cleanup and Repair buttons are active. If so, click these and restart Sibelius.:"

these buttons are NOT active

"If you’re still getting the error on startup, it could be that Sibelius’ ReWire needs to be manually reset. To do this, Quit Sibelius and delete the file called sibelius.rewire from the following locations:
Windows Vista and 7 (Sibelius 7):

C:\Users\Your username\Appdata\Roaming\Avid\Common"

This folder exists but is EMPTY

And my problem persists.

Re: Sib. 7.1: Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings
Posted by Alan Belkin - 14 Sep 07:53PM
This has just happened to me again. I tried all previous suggestions and none work. :-(

I think I know why it happened: This morning I had to change my default audio device (in windows 7) from speakers to headphones, for another app. I then opened Sib (I needed to see a score), closed it, and then changed the audio settings back to speakers. Now I get the bad settings warning every time. I have tried every combination of changing the manage audio control panel back and forth, with Sib running and not. Now I can't get any sound at all, with headphones OR speakers, from Sib. Sound in the rest of my computer is fine.

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. Check the settings for Interface in Audio Engine Options;
2. Ensure that no other audio-generating application is open, even in the background.

Has this issue been resolved? I'm suffering through exactly the same thing after a series of Sibelius "quitting unexpectedly."

Pretty much everything is the same:

Rewire Repair and Clean up are not active
The folder sibelius.rewire does not exist at the prescribed location

Any help is most appreciated. Thank you.

I have exactly the same problem but I can't get into Sibelius even clicking the 'OK' button on the dialog. 'Rewire' is empty. Plus, I can't force a close of the Sibelius window (which is noted to be 'not responding') and can't even shut down the computer without switching off the power....

Please help.

Thank you.

It would be helpful to me if you could please all let us know what your sound card is (at least). Those of you with M-Audio Fast Tracks, like me, might find a problem getting drivers, as the links above to Avid/M-Audio give either a 404 or a redirection (which also doesn't work).

I have the same Engine Error.
I have deleted the Plogue Engine and Configuration folders, restarted the computer, started Sib 7 and same error.

Found the problem. Switched RealTek to 5.1 speakers and that broke Sib7. Switched back to Quad speakers and all is well.

Having no luck with any of those fixes. Have done everything suggested so far, except for the last reply about the 'realtek to 5.1 speakers and back again', because I have no idea what that is.

Same engine error, have deleted plogue engine folder, restarted the computer, deleting the playback config folder just removed all my Sib 7 sounds and my midi sounds, so I've put it back again. Repair and Clean Up aren't active, and the sibelius.rewire file doesn't exist.

Any clue? Desperately need to finish and print up my final uni composition today...

Abibubble333,

Is this on Windows or on Mac OS?

Have you, either deliberately or inadvertently, used ReWire on this computer?

Please attach screen-shots of the "Audio Engine Options" window, and the "Playback Devices" window.

Re: Sib. 7.1: Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings
Posted by Robin Walker - 19 Mar 03:54PM
The issue appears to be that a WASAPI interface connection has been configured to "Speakers and Headphones", and that connection has been refused (as evidenced by the zero latency figure).

But WASAPI is frequently (depending on the driver) a single-client only interface, so that only one application can use it at a time.

So, if another application, or even Windows itself (for system sounds) is using the "Speakers and Headphones", then Sibelius will not be able to use the WASAPI interface to that physical audio device.

I suggest that you try, in "Audio Engine Options" configuring a "(DS)" interface to the same physical audio output device. The "(DS)" interface can be shared amongst multiple clients.

What does ' configuring a "(DS)" interface to the same physical audio output device. The "(DS)" interface can be shared amongst multiple clients' mean? I don't really know much computer things, I tend to turn it on and hope it works...

Use the "Interface" drop-down menu in "Audio Engine Options" to choose an Interface that goes to "Speakers and Headphones" that is marked "(DS)" rather than the one that is marked "(WASAPI)".

The rest was explanation rather than instruction.

MrCliff, try this:

- ensure Sibelius is quit;
- click Start -> All Apps -> Avid -> Sibelius 7.5 User Data;
- from that "Sibelius 7.5" folder, delete the sub-folder "PlogueEngine";
- now try launching Sibelius 7.5.

Does it work now? If not, please attach a screen-shot of the error message.

A potential suspect might be the StageLight ASIO driver. You could try uninstalling that driver, restarting Windows, and testing Sibelius again.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for your suggestion.. Oddly, this seems to be intermittent, which makes it harder to trouble shoot. This morning the first chart I loaded worked fine but then I returned to another (different) project and got the error.

I then saw your post and have now removed the 'PlogueEngine' folder and so far, so good!

I'll let you know if it looks like a permanent fix.

Many thanks!

Hi! I acquired this problem yesterday when I did an AVG Driver Update on my Dell laptop and apparently updated to an audio driver that my Sibelius First 7 didn't like. Fortunately AVG Driver Update gives you the opportunity to create a Restore Point before continuing, which I did. This morning I figured out how to Restore (by Googling "Windows 10 Restore Points"). It takes a while to do the Restore, but it's now complete, and Sib is back in all its glory, complete with sound!

I just started having this problem too (on Sibelius 7.5). Deleting the Plogue Engine and Playback Configurations folders works-in fact, deleting just the former seems to be sufficient-but at the exact moment I restart Sibelius after doing this, the folders reappear. The sounds work for a few minutes in that state of affairs, but then the program crashes, and if I restart it without deleting the Plogue Engine, they don't work. Is there a way to prevent the folders from coming back?

For the record, my C:\Users\[username]\Appdata\Roaming\Avid\Common folder is empty, and was to begin with. It seems that all of the ReWire-related things are in C:Program Files.

What changed on your computer between when Sibelius last worked correctly, and when it first started crashing?

What applications or new devices have been installed in that time?

Is this on Windows or on Mac OS?

> Is there a way to prevent the folder from coming back?

Of course the folder comes back: that is what it is meant to do. It is not what is causing the crashes. The folder needs to be there for Sibelius to work.

Please give full text of any error messages.

Please attach screen-shots of the Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. Playback Devices;
2. Audio Engine Options.

I get the "Audio Engine: Bad Settings" error like the original poster did. No other error messages than that. I'm on a Windows machine.

Since the last time Sibelius worked without this issue happening, I installed one new game and a patch to an old game. There may have been a Windows update since then too. Other than that, there have been no new installations or changes to the system.

Audio Engine Options screenshot. I notice that the "Repair" button is no longer grayed out, as it was before I tried deleting any folders, but clicking it now doesn't seem to do anything.

1. After quitting Sibelius, navigate in Windows Explorer to the PlogueEngine folder. From inside the PlogueEngine folder, open the file "PlogueEngine_x64.log" into NotePad, then copy and paste the entire log file into your next post.

2. What is the brand and model number of the sound card in this PC?

3. Open Windows Device Manager;
- pull down the menu "View", and select "Show hidden devices";
- expand the section "Sound, video and game controllers";
- for each item listed in that section EXCEPT "Microsoft Streaming..." and "Microsoft Trusted..." do the following:
-- double-click the item to open its Properties;
-- click tab "Driver";
-- copy the data in the lines "Driver Date" and "Driver Version" together with the name of each device;
-- repeat for all listed items.
- then copy all the assembled device names with their own driver dates and versions, into your next post.

I used dxdiag to find information on the sound card. It says:

Name: 226-T11-4(2-NVIDIA High Definition Audio)
Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_0083&SUBSYS_19DA1435&REV_1001\5&445F8BD&0&0001

Is that the information you need?

From the Windows Device Manager:

NVIDIA High Definition Audio
Driver Date: 5/10/2016
Driver Version: 1.3.34.15

Realtek High Definition Audio
Driver Date: 9/1/2015
Driver Version: 6.0.1.7599

This is the error from the log.

It's the sort of thing that could be caused by a background application holding the system sound output device open exclusively so that Sibelius cannot use it.

In your case, try restarting Windows and not allowing any application to be launched or be auto-launched by Windows. For instance, kill off GOG.COM and anything else like it.

Then, having killed any background applications, are you able to launch and use Sibelius?

Both the device drivers for the audio output devices (both NVIDIA and Realtek) are out-of-date, but not to the extent that they could be causing this issue.

If you want multiple applications to be able simultaneously to use the same audio output device, then you should configure Windows control panel Sound to disable "Exclusive mode" on the chosen output device.

Control panel Sound -> Playback -> Select the Default Device -> click Properties -> Advanced -> uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"
