Sib. 7.1: Play one voice from multiple voice staff
Posted by Kenneth Winiecki - 09 Aug 08:05PM
I'm just learning Sibelius and Photoscore to practice chorus music. I scanned a score that contains soprano and alto on one staff, and tenor and bass on another staff. I selected each of the alto notes and made them voice 2 (green), and did likewise for the bass notes. Is there a simple way to assign an instrument to each of the voices so I can play just the tenor notes and use the Mixer to control the volume of each of the voices? Or is the only way to add a separate staff for each voice and use File / Filters / Top Note (etc) to copy each voice to a separate staff (and delete the two original staffs)?

You can't assign different instruments to different voices on the same staff: the instrument assignment applies to all notes on the staff.

Yes, you can add staves and split the voices out.

Everything from one staff goes to one midi channel so it's going to be awkward to listen to voices in one staff separately. In theory you could filter / select one voice and temporarily turn off playback in the properties / inspector panel but that is a bit tedious.

If you want to assign each voice to a different instrument the easiest way is indeed to filter / select a voice, and then cut / paste it onto a new staff. If you choose soprano / alto etc playback will be automatically assigned to the appropriate voice.

If that is just for an aural check / playback you could keep the original staves but mute them while listening to the split staves. That might save you time.

You want the "Playback/Solo or mute by voice" plugin. It's downloadable in the usual way, from within Sibelius.

"This plugin lets you set the Play on Pass properties for all 8 passes to on or off for each of the 4 possible voices in a staff. It will function as a way to either solo or mute individual voices.

Plug-in written by Bob Zawalich"

I had forgotten I had written that plugin! Sounded kind of familiar... :)

Thanks, Laurence.

Continuing... The score I scanned has a few pages of 2-staff systems (staff 1: soprano/alto; staff 2: tenor/bass), followed by a few pages of 6-staff systems (sop, alto, tenor, bass, piano (2)), followed by a few pages of 2-staff systems again. I want to add a separate alto staff (and then a separate bass staff) to the first section (and then to the third section). But whenever I try to add a separate alto staff to the first section by selecting just the sop/alto staff and then Home / Instruments / Add, the staff is added to the entire score, not to just the first section. How do I make the first section (and later the last section) like the middle section?

Instruments are always added to the entire score. If there are empty staves, use Hide Empty Staves to make those disappear, and put notes in where you want the staves to be visible.
