Sib. First: Playback goes out of tune
Posted by Philippe Mius d'Entremont - 15 Jan 01:56AM
Hello,

First post here. My parts are starting to randomly transpose and, though it is hilarious, it's impossible to work with. It does that on my own stuff and in the included files. I trashed the preferences but no luck. Exporting in aiff is completely whacked but an exported midi file plays fine in Logic. Any ideas?

Sibelius First 6.2
Mac OS X 10.6.6

Thanx

We used to have a problem with trombones with glissandos. In editing his score, a user would inadvertently stop playback in the middle of a glissando. Sibelius would be interrupted in the middle of changing pitch and would remember that odd pitch. Until Sibelius was reloaded, the trombone would play out of tune.

I haven't run into this problem in a long time. It has probably been corrected.

Can you provide a bit more information about the transposition your score is experiencing? Are the notes visually changing in the score, or is it just playback?

The notes don't change at all. Sometimes it happens from the start, sometimes later in the pieces. I can even start it again and it will drift further down the piece. It's really strange, as if some tracks suddenly decide to transpose out of key. Once again, exported midi files play fine in Logic and the score looks fine in Sibelius.

What i'm trying to do is take some quartets parts I have and re-arrange as duets, so I guess I can export to Logic, do my arrangement there, write down what to cut/paste etc... and then do the change in Sibelius but it's a real drag!

What playback device(s) are you using, Philippe? Can you attach the score in question here?

I've just noticed this happening to me for the first time today. It doesn't happen when I use the Sibelius playback engine; but finally I spent the time yesterday and today getting the Garritan JABB to work through Kontakt Player 4.

My score was a very simple two horns and three rhythm jazz score. The rhythm section stayed on pitch; the flugelhorn and tenor sax each dropped by a half step in playback.

I switched back to the Sibelius engine and the playback problem went away. After all the work I went to getting the Kontakt stuff set up again (I moved everything to a Mac Pro recently) I'd hate to not be able to use it!

I use the General midi (enhanced) playback settings.

I did some test just to check when it does happen and sometimes it will get out of tune from the beginning, then everything fine until bar 17, start over, wrong from the beginning, another try, fine until bar 26, etc... Seems pretty random to me.

The score is not complete but there it is.

Jeff, if you stop playback in the middle of a gliss. when using KP2, subsequent playback will be all screwed up. You can reset it by typing ~B0,64 into the affected staff using Technique text and then play from that point. This doesn't explain Philippe's problem, however.

Philippe, there's nothing in your score that would explain the problem you're experiencing. Do you have a MIDI keyboard connected with a pitch bend wheel on it? Is it possible that you're accidentally triggering the pitch bend wheel at any point, or otherwise fiddling with any knobs on the keyboard?

I do have a midi keyboard and it's getting old; maybe it's glitching on its own because I'm not touching it!

Try disconnecting it and see if that helps.

I'll give it a try. In the meantime, I noticed that when Logic is stopped and a midi track is in record, I get rapidly blinking 11 and 28 in the midi in window in the transport. I think that CC 11 is pitchbend in Logic, so the keyboard seems to be transmitting but I get no recorded midi event. I guess that could throw Sibelius playback off.

Daniel - thanks for looking at my score. I only experimented with a gliss on the piano part, and I thought I had removed it. Maybe I didn't on the version I sent to you.

Anyway, I got the 3.0 upgrade to JABB from Garritan and switched to the ARIA player, and I've not encountered the problem any more. Perhaps it was something in how Sibelius talked to Kontakt Player 4. I've never been a big fan of the Kontakt Player interface and the ARIA player just seems to work better for me.

One other related question, Daniel, which I should probably put in another thread: is there any advantage to using the Notation version of the JABB files instead of the regular ones? The JABB manual is a little cagey about it. Thanks!

Jeff

Sibelius uses the notation sounds in JABB by default, because they have a consistent set of keyswitches and controllers that are more convenient for being driven by software, but less useful for live performance of the sounds on a MIDI keyboard. You don't need to do anything specific about this: Sibelius takes care of it for you.

I have had the same problem for a while and I am getting mad with Sibelius. I use NotePerformer and it is SO unbelievable, and so annoying. I am working with a voice and piano template right now, and it might start fine but it got out of tune later. Yesterday I was working with a Choir template (SATB) and it had a voice (in usual just two voices playing) out of tune so it was impossible to hear.

My setup is a Mac Pro with Mojave (1,6 gHz - 8 core, 32 RAM), a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP, NotePerformer 3.3.2 and Sibelius Ultimate 2021.2.

Please, HELP!

This is almost always caused by a connected MIDI keyboard interfering with playback.

Unplug any MIDI keyboard, and then try playback. If the problem goes away, you have identified the culprit.
