Sib. 6.1: Bar number position in dynamic parts
Posted by James Mablin - 26 Apr 09:36AM
I've been suing Sibelius for many years now and am ashamed to say I have steered clear of the dynamic parts, preferring to export parts to format them. However I have finally decided to man up and tackle the dynamic parts! I have hit an issue and have searched the forum but did not come across a thread about it. Is it possible to change the position on the bar numbers (Above or below the staff) by instrument? When I change it in the engraving rules it changes it for all parts, and the multiple part appearance options window doesn't have this option. When writing for strings for example, I want the bar numbers below the staff for the higher strings and above the staff for the lower strings as I have bar numbers showing for every bar.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

>I've been suing Sibelius for many years now...
How's the case going? :-)

Your request is quite unusual, but I think you can manage it.

You can set different vertical positions in parts and score (Engraving Rules>Bar numbers...Vertical Position). I imagine you have bar numbers above staves in the score, so set the vertical position for parts to something like -6.5. They'll appear below the stave in all parts.

Now, in the Parts window, select all parts where you instead want the bar numbers above the stave, and choose Multiple Parts Appearance. Click Yes to the warning and go to the House Style tab. Here, under 'Bar numbers' choose the (different) text style 'Bar numbers (parts)'. If the vertical position of these isn't suitable, you change it in House Style>Default Positions.

Hope that helps

Jeremy

Thank you Jeremy. That worked great, and while an easier fix would have been great, it's nice to know I am not going crazy, and it really was an issue that you had to find a work around for. Thanks again for your help, you solved my problem :)

This isn't a bug or a workaround: it's just how it works. We provided the 'Bar numbers (parts)' text style for precisely this purpose.

That makes sense, but wouldn't it be easier if the vertical position of bar numbers in the engraving rules was not a global function? The bar numbers shown has to be set for each dynamic part, so why not the vertical position. I'm sure there is a reason, I'm just trying to figure it out.

The values in Engraving Rules are basically just a proxy for the settings in House Style > Default Positions for the 'Bar numbers' text style.

Hi Daniel,

I'm looking to do the exact same thing as the original poster but in Sibelius Ultimate.

I have one part where I need the bar numbers to be below the stave; all others can be above the stave.

What's the best way to go about this?

Many thanks.

The procedure is still the same as it was 9 years ago in earlier posts in this thread, for Sibelius 6. Just follow the same instructions.
