Sib. 5.2.5: Scorch & print to PDF refused (CutePDF)
Posted by Mike Onyskiw - 16 Apr 07:04PM
Trying to print from a Scorch file on a web page on a Windows PC is blocked.

Allowed Printing and Saving in export dialog in Sibelius, checked on second machine by printing direct to printer, and save to file (.sib) is fine, but refuses to print to CutePDF (the free version at http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp) with a dialog box "Printing to file is not allowed"

There's a slightly labarynthine explanation for why I need to do this (transpose by 2nd party who doesn't have Sibelius, for 3rd party needs transposed version as PDF)

Can anyone else confirm this behaviour & that it is a bug in Sibelius/Scorch? (I expect it to be an issue with other PDF creators also...)

Any suggestions for another way round this would also be welcomed (3rd party doesn't have access to original)

As far as I know, it isn't a bug, Scorch was designed to block printing to file. I suppose it makes stealing scores from Scorch websites a bit harder (though obviously you are not trying to steal anything).

I don't know of any workround except creating a PDF from Sibelius not from Scorch.

I agrewe with Rob; the print to file thing prevents Scorch from printing as pdf. About all you can do is get someone to print from Sibelius to a PDF for you or to print to hardcopy and scan it back to a pdf.

Which is a genuine pain. It is a shame that it has to work this way.

Thanks Guys,

the reason I'm thinking of it as a bug at the moment is that I should have effectively granted those rights by allowing printing and saving. It *would* be the expected behaviour if I'd denied saving?

The only thing this appears to add in the way of protection is that you have to have a full copy of Sibelius to do anything with the ".sib" file saved from Scorch - and that's not related to any "stealing files" issue :-(

I've invested in Sibelius, but I'm in a different continent and timezone to the 2nd & 3rd parties. Both of those have limited computer skills (their talents lie elsewhere). The website is protected, and the 3rd party doesn't have direct access to it.

3rd party can't launch the .sib file direct...

Transposing and converting to PDF at my end every time was adding too much delay for the MD & artists who are rehearsing :(

Real life is never easy ;-)

Regards,
Mike

Its a pretty awful idea to prevent printing to a file as a method of preventing a buyer to print his sheet music several times.
I like to have my backup documents as files instead of on paper.

The mechanism in Scorch that preventing printing to file is pretty stupid, because it depends on the virtual printer responding "I'm a file printer" when asked. Its no problem at all to create a printer driver that responds "I'm a real printer" when asked, but in reality the driver prints to a file.

Bottom line: the protection mechanism inside Scorch is just an annoyance for the "average user" while anyone else just install a "fake" file-printer driver.

The EU infosoc-direktiv is mend to protect digital stuff from being copied outside the private sphere, while private use of copies are mend to be legal.
Currently there is a special case for CD's and DVD's saying its forbidden to circumvent copy protection mechanisms in order to copy such items even for private use.
But using a fake" file-printer driver to circumvent the copy protection mechanism in Scorch to get a digital copy fore private use only is legal, at least inside EU.

One example of a "fake" file-printer driver is "The Paperless Printer": http://www.rarefind.com/paperlessprinter/downloads.html. Its free for personal use.

Install "The Paperless Printer" and try it out on e.g. this Scorch page: http://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/se/ID_No/34451/Product.aspx.

Regards,
Kurt
