Sibelius "swings" for Carl Allen

The omnipresence of swing is a recurring theme in the music and life of world-class drummer/composer Carl Allen.

While still in his teens, the Milwaukee native performed with legends Sonny Stitt and James Moody. After studying at The University of Wisconsin/Green Bay and William Patterson College in New Jersey, Allen earned a dream position in trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's band, where he remained for eight years, holding concurrent titles of drummer, music director and road manager.

In 1988, Allen co-founded Big Apple Productions with alto saxophonist Vincent Herring. Through their production efforts for a number of record labels in Japan, the collaboration introduced the world to young jazz artists Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton and Cyrus Chestnut.

Allen's kit includes DW drums, Sabian cymbals - and his favorite composition and arranging tool, Sibelius.

"The Sibelius software is the most comprehensive, intuitive music notation software that I have ever used," he says. "In fact, I had music completed not long after installing the software. If you want a great music notation program and don't have endless hours to figure it out-get Sibelius."

Today, Allen maintains an extensive schedule of recording and touring. He remains active as a leader with his New York All-Star Band, The Carl Allen Quintet, and as a sideman, with playing and recording credits that include Lena Horne, Branford Marsalis, Billy Taylor, Herbie Hancock and Rickie Lee Jones.

Allen is not only a respected player, but also an in-demand music educator, conducting a number of workshops and clinics throughout the year. Since 2001, he has been a member of the faculty in the Jazz Studies program at New York City's Julliard School of Music.

"An endorsee like Carl Allen is a testament to the quality and variety of people using our products," states Bill Reilly, President, Sibelius USA, Inc. "We not only respect Carl as a musician, but also appreciate the fact that he shares our commitment to education, as he is more than willing to share his experiences and techniques with young musicians."

To date, there are more than 100,000 Sibelius users worldwide, including television composer Alf Clausen, musician Pat Metheny, composer Sammy Nestico, choral composer John Rutter, guitarist Andy Summers and conductor Michael Tilson-Thomas.
