What are cookies?

A cookie is a piece of information sent by the web site you're visiting and stored by your browser on your machine. They were invented several years ago by Netscape who called them 'cookies' for reasons best known to them. Many people are worried about accepting cookies, but they are actually mostly harmless and benign. Here's why:

  1. They are stored in a text file. This means that they can't contain viruses, a program to wipe your hard drive, or a script that steals your address book. They are never 'run' by the browser, it only reads information out of them.
  2. They are sent by the web site. This means that they can only contain information that the web site already knows. If you've never given your e-mail address to the Sibelius web site, there's no way for it to end up in a cookie sent by our site (not that we store e-mail addresses in cookies anyway).
  3. They are (usually) only sent back to the site that sent them. When a web site sets a cookie, it sets which sites the cookie may be sent back to. However, it doesn't have complete freedom in this - it must include the last two parts of the web site address, so a cookie sent by www.sibelius.com could potentially be sent back to any other .sibelius.com server (such as secure.sibelius.com), but not to any .com server. Usually, a web server will only choose to send cookies back to itself.
