566: How to use the Sibelius Sounds libraries with Reverb

Option 1: load a preset for the Kontakt Player

  1. Download KontaktPlayer2.fxb (for Windows and Mac VST) or KontaktPlayer2AU.fxb (for Mac AU only) and save it somewhere you can easily locate (e.g. your Desktop)
  2. In Sibelius, go to Play, Playback Devices
  3. Click on one of the Kontakt Player 2's on the right, in the Active Devices list
  4. Click the Show button to show the Kontakt Player 2 window
  5. Click on the Load Preset button in the top left-hand corner of the Kontakt Player's interface. (What does this look like?)
  6. Select the preset file you downloaded in step 1 (either KontaktPlayer2.fxb or KontaktPlayer2AU.fxb), then click Open
  7. Close the Kontakt Player's interface
  8. Repeat for any additional Kontakt Players

Once this is set up, make sure your score is set up to play reverb. You can choose the amount of reverb in the Play, Performance menu.

Option 2: modify an existing playback configuration

If you have installed Sibelius Sounds Essentials for Sibelius 5 you will have two playback configurations:

Sibelius Essentials (16 sounds), which uses one instance of Kontakt Player 2 and therefore allows 16 different simultaneous sounds

Sibelius Essentials (32 sounds), which uses two instances and therefore 32 different simultaneous sounds

To use another sound library with Kontakt Player 2, such as Sibelius Sounds Rock and Pop, Choral or World Music you should:

  1. Choose Play > Playback Devices
  2. From the Configuration drop-down menu, choose Sibelius Essentials (32 sounds), if it is not already chosen
  3. Click the New button
  4. Type a suitable name, e.g. Sibelius Choral, and click OK
  5. In the Active Devices list, change the Sound set column for each instance of Kontakt Player 2 from Sibelius Essentials to Sibelius Choral
  6. Click Save to save your configuration, then click Close

This will allow up to 32 sounds to be loaded automatically into the two instances of the Kontakt Player 2. You will also notice that reverb has been automatically added to the sound. You can choose the amount of reverb in the Play, Performance menu.

Option 3: configure reverb manually

In cases where Kontakt Player 2 doesn't have reverb you can either insert a reverb effect (see Effects page in 4.11 Playback Devices of the Sibelius Reference) or you can insert reverb into the Kontakt Player 2 yourself:

  1. Go to Play, Playback Devices
  2. Click on one of the Kontakt Player 2's on the right, in the Active Devices list
  3. Click the Show button to show the Kontakt Player 2 window
  4. Make sure you can see the Outputs by clicking the Outputs button at the top of the window.
  5. Under Aux 1 click one of the down arrows and choose Reverb. You will notice ru (short for reverb unit) will appear.
  6. Click on ru so the box is highlighted.
  7. Click the Edit Effect button along the top of the Outputs section.
  8. Drag the Dry slider on the right hand side all the way to the left.
  9. Now, under the Aux 1 slider click the Conf. button to open the Channel output configuration window.
  10. Under physical out click each output and choose st.1 [1]
  11. Click OK and click OK again when prompted to close and re-open the Kontakt Player 2.
  12. Close the Kontakt Player 2 window and repeat the above process for each activated instance of the Kontakt Player 2.

Once this is set up, make sure your score is set up to play reverb. You can choose the amount of reverb in the Play, Performance menu.
