512: Registering Sibelius on Windows Vista

When running Sibelius, Sibelius Student, Sibelius Instrumental Teacher Edition or G7 for the first time on Windows Vista and attempting to register it, you will be informed that you must be an administrator user in order to register, and the 15 day grace period will be unavailable.

This is due to Windows Vista's new User Access Control features (which are provided to increase the security of your computer); it is not possible to register Sibelius as normal, even if your Windows Vista user account has administrator privileges.

To solve this problem:

  • Click the Start button
  • Select Computer from the menu to see your computer's disk drives
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 4 (or wherever you have Sibelius, Sibelius Student, Sibelius Instrumental Teacher Edition or G7 installed)
  • Right-click the Sibelius application icon and select Run as Administrator from the context menu
  • The application will now run, and you should be able to register, following the instructions in Registering Sibelius in your Handbook or User Guide.

After you have successfully registered Sibelius, you can quit the program and then run it from the shortcut in the Start menu as normal; there is no need to Run as Administrator once the software is registered.

Important

The earliest version of Sibelius that we recommend for use with Windows Vista is Sibelius 4.1. If you currently own an earlier version of Sibelius, upgrade now.
