510: Sibelius - playback is fuzzy and distorted
Problem:
The sound quality of Sibelius's playback when using virtual instruments (such as the Kontakt Player) is fuzzy and distorted. This is caused by an overly low latency or buffer size, which causes Sibelius to send the sound signal to your audio interface faster than it can be processed.
Solution
The solution is to increase the change the latency/buffer size, which reduced the demands placed on your computer's processor and audio interface.
(Select your version of Sibelius to read detailed instructions.)
Sibelius 5
- Go to Play > Playback Devices > Audio Engine Options
- Select a larger buffer size. If you are unable to change the buffer size, please click on the ASIO Setup button to open your audio interface's control panel and change it there
- Click Close, then Close again and play your score back
If the problem persists, repeat the above procedure, but select a larger buffer size.
Sibelius 3 and 4
- Open a score
- Go to Window > Kontakt Player
- Click the Audio setup button on the left-hand side
- Under the Latency option drag the slider to the right until the latency value is about 35 ms
- Click OK and play your score back
If the problem persists, repeat the above procedure, but select a larger latency.
If you are still having problems you should download and reinstall the latest audio interface drivers from the manufacturer's website. Please consult their support teams for information on how to do this.
