453: Using Sibelius with MIDI Yoke or MapleMIDI and software samplers or stand-alone MIDI applications such as MIDI-OX.

Sibelius 5 is a VST host, which means it is capable of loading virtual instruments such as the Kontakt Player 2 software sampler. If you're using virtual instruments with Sibelius, we strongly suggest you upgrade now. However, it is possible to link earlier versions of Sibelius to stand-alone virtual instruments (or other MIDI applications) using a program that creates virtual MIDI ports on your computer. Two such programs are MIDI Yoke and MapleMIDI.

Using MIDI Yoke to connect Sibelius to a software sampler.

In this example we will connect Sibelius to a software sampler via MIDI Yoke. You can also use MapleMIDI to do the same thing. Examples of software samplers are Native Instruments Kontakt, Tascam Gigastudio or Edirol HyperQuartet.

  • Open Sibelius and go to the Play > Devices menu.
  • In the Output section select MIDI Yoke NT: 1 and select your usual midi input device and press OK.
  • Then open the software sampler and in the MIDI Input section of whichever program you are using select MIDI Yoke NT: 1 as the input device.
  • When you then playback scores from Sibelius they will actually playback through the sampler program.

Using MIDI-OX as a MIDI message filter.

If you want to filter any MIDI messages coming into or going out from Sibelius you will need a program called MIDI-OX.

In this example we will connect MIDI-OX to Sibelius to filter the midi input coming into the computer before it reaches Sibelius. You will need to download and install MIDI-OX from here first

  • Open MIDI-OX and go to the Options > MIDI Devices menu.
  • In the MIDI Inputs section click on your usual MIDI input device and in the MIDI Outputs section select MIDI Yoke NT: 1 and press OK to close the dialog box.

  • BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DO NOT SIMULTANEOUS SELECT ANY MIDI YOKE PORTS AS BOTH INPUT AND OUTPUT IN ANY ONE PROGRAM OR YOU MAY GET A LOOP WHICH WILL CRASH YOUR COMPUTER AND FORCE YOU TO RESTART.

  • Then start Sibelius and if not prompted go to the Play > Devices menu.
  • In the Output section at the top of the screen select your normal midi output, probably either your soundcard or keyboard. In the Input section click on MIDI Yoke NT: 1. This will route the information coming out of MIDI-OX into Sibelius.
  • Now use Sibelius normally but keep MIDI-OX running at all times - if you minimise MIDI-OX it will usefully sit out of the way in the system tray to the left of the clock as a traffic-light icon.

NOTE: Sibelius does not support or accept any responsibility for any 3rd party software. For support on how to install and use the other software, even in conjunction with Sibelius, please contact the manufacturer.
