401: How to use the Roland GI-20

If you wish to use the Roland GI-20 with G7 or Sibelius then please note the following: You will need the appropriate USB driver for your operating system which you can download here or by going to www.RolandUS.com.

The GI-20 will then show up in the Play > Devices dialog as Roland GI-20 MIDI OUT. The GI-20 does not have a synthesizer itself so you will need to connect one to the MIDI OUT socket on the back of the GI-20 or use a soundcard or other device instead for playback. You will also need to make sure that if you turn the dial on the front of the GI-20 to MIDI Playback that the Select button is lit. If it isn't then press Select. Then in the Play > Devices menu you can press Test and you should hear a test signal from your synthesizer.

If you wish to use the GI-20 as an input device from a guitar fitted with an appropriate MIDI pickup (e.g. the Roland GK-2A) then plug the guitar into the GK socket on the front of the GI-20 and then click on Roland GI-20 MIDI IN in the input section of the Play > Devices menu. Then when you play some notes on the guitar you won't hear them but you will see the little green light on screen light up.
Also make sure you have MIDI Thru ticked.
Then just press ok and it is all setup.

Please note that when you turn the dial to MIDI Playback and press Select that this turns off the direct connection from the Guitar to the MIDI Out port. You will then not hear anything unless you have clicked on a staff in G7 or Sibelius as when the Select button it lit the MIDI signal is being routed through the computer.
