36: Multirests at the beginning of parts

Many users have asked how to stop Sibelius from displaying, for example, an eight-bar multirest at the beginning of an extracted part as a one bar rest followed by a seven-bar multirest. Sibelius behaves in this way because objects like the title etc. are attached to the first bar of the score, but if you inserted an extra bar at the start they end up being attached to bar 2. Attached objects always break multirests.

To solve this problem, make sure View > Attachment Lines is switched on. When you select e.g. the Title text object, you should see a dotted gray line extending from the text to the top staff. You can click and drag these system text objects - even though they will not move, the gray attachment line does move. When the attachment lines for all the system text objects are attached to bar 1, multirests will not be broken by them.

If the above procedure doesn't help, try this:

  1. Switch off Use Multirests in the Layout > Auto Layout menu (in Sibelius 2 and 3 this is the House Style menu, in Sibelius 1.4 this is Layout > Show Multirests).
  2. Cut (or copy) time signature and paste into bar 2
  3. Cut (or copy) tempo marking and paste into bar 2
  4. Insert an extra bar somewhere between bars 2 and 8.
  5. Delete bar 1
  6. Switch on Use Multirests from the appropriate menu.

You will now have the part beginning with an eight-bar multirest.
