189: MIDI files - files created in Sibelius do not play on Kawai MIDI devices

Kawai devices require that a MIDI file's resolution (a number used internally for subdividing beats) is a multiple of 96. MIDI files saved from early versions of Sibelius have a resolution of 256, which do not therefore play in Kawai devices.

In Sibelius 5 or later, you can choose the resolution when exporting the MIDI file i.e. 384, 480 or 960.

In Sibelius 2 for Windows, it's possible to change the resolution of MIDI files by installing this Registry patch - just click the link, and choose to Open the file from its current location. You will be asked if you want to merge this file into the registry: click Yes. Any MIDI files saved from Sibelius after this will use a resolution compatible with Kawai devices.

In Sibelius 1.4, you cannot change the default resolution used by Sibelius when saving MIDI files, but you can use the shareware MIDI program GNMidi to open and re-save MIDI files with a different resolution. You can download GNMidi here. Note that GNMIDI is not a Sibelius product and we cannot offer technical support on its use.
