169: Sibelius 2 introductory movies don't play

On some systems, the introductory movies on the Sibelius 2 CD-ROM will not play. You may get an error Could not open movie, or you may find that an application other than QuickTime Player, such as Windows Media Player or RealPlayer, starts up. Only QuickTime Player can view .mov files.

First, make sure that you have installed QuickTime from your Sibelius 2 CD-ROM.

If reinstalling QuickTime doesn't solve the problem, .mov files have probably been associated with another program on your computer.

To fix this:

  • Insert your Sibelius 2 CD-ROM
  • When the menu appears, click Browse this CD
  • Double-click the "Movies" folder
  • Select one of the files in that folder by clicking once with the left mouse-button
  • Now hold down Shift and right-click to see the context sensitive menu.
  • Choose Open with
  • From the list of applications, choose QuickTime Player, and switch on the box that says Always use this application to open these files

This problem occurs if another program on your computer has 'stolen' the file association for QuickTime Movie files.
