168: Fermatas (pauses) - changing the playback length of fermatas

If you need to change the duration of a fermata, simply insert a metronome mark over the note with the pause, and then insert a new metronome mark over the next note to restore the original tempo.

You can hide these metronome marks as follows:

  • In Sibelius 2 or later: simply select the metronome mark and choose Edit > Hide or Show > Hide (shortcut Command-Shift-H or Ctrl+Shift+H)
  • In Sibelius 1.x: precede the metronome mark with a tilde (~), and then switch off Show text after tilde on the Text page of the File > House Style dialog
